Hello, let's start with this one:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734395(WS.10).aspxDo you use the builtin administrator account or a domain admin? If domain admin make sure to use RUNAS with command prompt.Best regards

Hello Richard,
Thank you for posting here.
From your description, it seems you encountered the issue is that system state backup failed with error code '2155348165' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.
Based on the experience, we have come across a similar issue where quota was setup for the SYSTEM account on the target drive, (in our case d:\).
To help you troubleshoot the issue, I would like to suggest you perform the following methods.
Method 1:
Please check if any quota is setup for either SYSTEM account or for the F:\ drive.
If so disable quota temporarily or increase the quota to sufficient size and re-run backup job.
Method 2:
If the issue still persists open a command prompt and type the following without the quotation marks.
"icacls d:\* /grant SYSTEM:(F)" press ENTER.
Then re-run backup job.
If it still gives us the access denied message:
"Failed to set security on the files and folders under '<backup location>\WindowsImageBackup\<Computer Name>'.
heck that SYSTEM has permissions to overwrite the previous backup. Access is denied.
Please run the following command and send it to a log file which you then send to me.
"icacls d:\* > icacls.log" press ENTER.
Method 3:
Test backing up the with system state to another volume other than d:\ and see if we have the same access denied error.
Method 4:
If it still fails with this the information, please re-run a backup job again and use Wbdiag to collect the diagnostic log for further analyzing the issue.
Please download the Wbdiag diagnostic tool from the following link, and then refer to the usage.rtf to collect the diagnostic logs

Please note: The data collected is saved in the WBDiag-yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss directory. Zip
Please send the mps report, logs and screenshot to tfwst@microsoft.com, please note the time and date that you ran the backup job.
I appreciate your time and efforts

@Meinolf Weber,I havetryed the mentioned article already, but dit not give an resolution because de logs and the GUI messages are empty. Thanks for the sugestion.@Avid Shen,Thanks for you action list, Ifollowd your steps, while i do not have all the results yet i just want to let you know the progress.1) No quota's are in use (Checkbox on drive properties is unchecked)2) Did already check the properties by GUI, but issued you command also.3) Made a log before and after resetting the SYSTEM permissions.(can send them if you wish)I'am not able to rerun a backup jobbefore i reboot the server because the backup image is locked or something and i get the permission errors until i reboot the server, so the permission error only happen after a failed backup.Because i have only one extra drive I tryed to allocate thereserved free space on the drive to a temporay drive for backup test witch unfortunately failed "A failure was encountered while retrieving the volume properties. Error code: 0x80070002@020A000D" so this didnt work as axpected, and i cant use the partition.I'llcontinue this asap doing the dbdiag step when i have restarted the server and i'll post/mail you the result.Tanks verry much for responding to my thread. With kind regards,Richard van Vliet

Hi Richared,
Thank you for your reply.
Here is some research and analysis based on the VssadminData.txt.
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool

Shadow Copy Storage association
For volume: (D:)\\?\Volume{1f90317f-b0dc-11dd-b4d8-001aa024c1ac}\

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 496 KB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.93 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED

Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{1f90317e-b0dc-11dd-b4d8-001aa024c1ac}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 B
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 0 B
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 3.125 GB
UNBOUNDED means VSS storage space is set to unlimited on the drive D. The Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space is set to unlimited on C: drive, however, if there is not enough disk space on C drive and D drive. The error message will occurs "There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set."
Please set all drives on the system to UNBOUNDED, and then test to see if you are able to perform a backup.
Steps:
1. Go to the Properties of the C: drive and D: drive (Right click -> Properties) and select the "Shadow Copies" tab.
2. Select the drive under the "Select a volume" section. Click "Settings" button.
3. Now, under "Storage area" section select "No limit" for Maximum size.
4. Now you can run the the command "vssadmin list shadowstorage /for=<drive:>" and it will display the shadow copy storage space details for that drive.
5. Please verify to make sure there is enough free space on the drive D: for the backup
Afterwards, please test to take systemstatebackup in clean boot mode, you may also try to put systemstatebackup replica on another volume to see if it will be success.
Step : Perform a Clean Boot
1. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
4. Restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the box and click "OK".
Hope this can be helpful. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your reply.
If you could take time to take systemstatebackup in clean boot mode, please run "chkdsk /f" on both C drive and D drive before you reboot it, this can ensure that there is no errors on disk that can be influent on preparing the backup image when backup begins.
Please let me know the test result at your convenience.
I appreciate your time and effort. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi Richard,
We performed a further research on the wbadiag, the VHD file remains mounted but the volume inside VHD does not surface even after 60 seconds. So it was timeout and failed the backup.
If you can have a chance to try clean boot, we would like also suggest you to check the following things.
1. Can you check on the problematic machine to see whether blbdrive.sys is working fine?
a. Open device management
b. Choose View->Show hidden devices
c. Expand System devices
d. You should see "File as Volume Driver" entry without any warning icon.
2. The WBDIAG traces dont seem to be in verbose mode. Can you try getting verbose level traces from the machine where this issue reproduces?
Wbdiag -mode on -logtype fulllog -level info
After your repro the issue, please run the following command and send us all the log file under that new folder with Backup time.
Wbdiag mode off
You may send the log files to tfwst@microsoft.com

Hi David,I am sorry it took some time to respond, was not easy to find a suitable time to shutdown the server (24H company) , but last weekend i did succeed, so a transcript follows.I started with you first sugestion, checking the 'File as Volume' driver.
Under Other Hardware there was a unkown device. after getting the properties it reported its location on the 'File as Volume' driver, Although under System Devices the 'File as volume' Driverswas also present butthere was no error reported.
I started a check for newhardwarefrom the properties window, but it was unable to find a matching driver, so i deleted the unknow device and the file as volumen device under system devices and did a Hardware rescan, witch did not find the hardware either, so i installed is manually, witch installed it without errors.
SoI continued with you clean boot advise, After the clean reboot i tested the backup again, but it failed again in the same way. Only this time when running the backup the hardware wizzard popped-up installing an unknown device, for witch it finally could not find a driver, after cheking the hadrware properties again, the 'Unknow Device' had reapeared, so there might be somthing wrong with the 'File As Volume' driver after all, but how to fix ? it will not find a driver online or on the system.
I did find in the following link, that the driver is included in de Windows Backup feature, but it did not feld goed starting a reinstallation of this feature with out consulting first, because it might change all the researce that you have done so far.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/b9a6d298-511d-4ee2-99ba-66f75a4866e8
You will receive the debug logs in you mail.Hope to hear from you, and again thanks for all your, and you teamseffort.kind regards,Richard van Vliet

Hi David,I'm also very interested in calculating necessary available storage on the target drive.I'm currently getting "... failed with following error code '2155348165'.", but it works when I have free up some space by deleting an older backup.Cheers
