Backup
Hi all, I am using a backup software other than the native windows backup. I did run the backup as a user that is member of the backup operators group. But the backup software still cannot copy specific files which the user that the backup run as it has no permission on them. Does the backup operator function only if it's used with windows backup? Backup Operators is a local group that enables a user to back up and restore files and directories on workstations and servers in a Windows NT domain. Members of this group can log on to a computer, back up or restore files, and shut down the computer. Because of how the account is set up, they can back up files regardless of whether they have read/write access to the files. However, they can't change access permissions of the files or perform other administrative tasks. So make sure that the permissions on that data isn't for specific accounts/groups only.MCTS...

Hi, I would like to confirm that does the native Windows Backup application works normally? Please verify the NTFS permissions of the files that cannot be backed up. In addition, you may also try to use administrator to run this third party backup software for test purpose. Since this is a third party software, I also recommend that you contact the software vendor support for further assistance. Regards,Arthur Li TechNet Community Support

The Backup operators is a special group with specific permisions and inside you can nest any backup account from any backup software you want. However the Backup Operators group does not have enough acces to do full VSS protection of components within the system state or change ACL lists that is why some third party software recommend having Domain/local Admins rights. I hope this is more clear now. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
