Auto shutdown of Win2003 - how do I?
Hello All, I am wondering how I can tell a Dell Server/Windows 2003 to shut down if there are temperature problems in the server room? What is the best way to do that? thanks...

Usually, the managment agents have this capability. I am not familiar with the DELL managment software, but I know for a fact that HP's Insight Manager agents will shut the servers down when temperature thresholds are crossed. Check your documentation that was shipped with the server or visit the Dell website. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

You can use any third party software http://www.temperaturealert.com http://www.itwatchdogs.com/ or you if have an alert in the event log, you can shutdown the server using shutdown.exe command. http://portal.sivarajan.com/2010/04/generate-email-alert-to-event-attach.html Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ http://publications.sivarajan.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

APC UPS has an environmental monitoring card that will do it. The environmental card monitors the ambient room/cabinet temperature & humity and if they rise above the threshold, it will send out a signal across the network to initiate server(s) shutdown. The thresholds are programmable and so are alerts and actions taken. Call APC www.apcc.com for details. Hello All, I am wondering how I can tell a Dell Server/Windows 2003 to shut down if there are temperature problems in the server room? What is the best way to do that? thanks... The best way is to check on your servers' BIOS configuration. It is written there, check out for it ! It is about the temperature of the system that once reached, the server shuts down by himself.

Hello, Are you are talking about a temperature problem in the server itself or in the server closet/cabinet? There is a big difference between say a fan blowing out and causing a CPU to overheat and an air conditioner malfunction in the server room. Most machines are set up to shut down automatically if there is an overheat problem with the CPU but the APC software/hardware monitors the server closet and/or cabinet and can alert you if there's a fire, a/c problem, moisture problem, etc. Depending on what's in your server closet (i.e $$ investment) it may be worth it to spend a little more for environmental monitor and get a text message or e-mail in the middle of the night after the environmental monitoring systems has initiated a shutdown of all servers because there is a water leak or because there is a fire in the building. sorry I have been unable to work on implementing the shut down settings yet... we do have server-closet 24/7 temperature monitoring.. but, in a worst case scenario, I want the servers to shut down... or at least a few of the 'least' critical servers..... thanks...

MSUTech, Here's a link to APC NetBotz Environmental monitoring for data centers or APC 9619 Environmental Monitoring Card for APC Smart UPS' for server racks and other smaller operations. The software included will shut down your servers if the server room temp, humidy, etc. crosses the threshold you set.
