Assign Permissions from root to sub folders
Hi! Is it possible to propagate permissions from a Root folder to all sub folders but also keep the existing permissions on sub folders? Windows 2008 R2. Thanks.

Yes it is possible. Dont apply the permissions from the Advanced tab of the security permissions. When you right click a file/folder and select Properties, you can see the security permissions. If you add or remove permissions from here, they will not overwrite existing permissions. One thing to look out for though, is if there is a sub-folder that is not inheriting permissions, they will not be applied to that folder and will need to be done manually. hope this helps

Well this is the problem. Most of the sub folders are not inheriting permissions from the root folder. Is there a way to enable the inherit permissions option for all folders at once instead of enabling it for each and every folder? Thanks.

Hi, I agree with Falcon IT Services. For the detailed explanation, please refer to the following Microsoft KB article: HOW TO: Control NTFS Permissions Inheritance in Windows http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313398 Regards,Arthur Li TechNet Community Support

Hi! Thanks for the reply but as i said i want to keep the current permissions on sub folders, the option "Repace all child objects" will replace them if i do that. Thanks.

is there a reason that there are so many child folders that are not inheriting permissions? it seems like you will have to restructure your folders so that the permissions can be easily manageable. as you can see, once you have too many child objects not inheriting permissions, managing these folders on an administration scale becomes difficult. you may need to complete this manually.
