Article ID: 979681 Hotfix Request
We are having a problem with our windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The server bluescreens every once and a while. The bugcheck States the problem as being : PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) PROCESS_NAME: splwow64.exe After reading the following article, i believe this could resolve the issue since we use older HP printers. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979681) Server Config: Windows Server 2008 r2 Enterprise 64bit os 48gb of ram Intel Xeon x5660 CPU x2 This server is our Client access server, hosting terminal services. The printers that are causing the bluescreens are being redirected from client machines. I am not sure if this plays a part in the problem, but it is necessary information.

Hello, if you think the article describes your problem in detail then call Microsoft support and request the hotfix. They are for free, so no problem to call them.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hi, Did you read the following sentence in the Microsoft KB article: FIX: A legacy HP printer driver may crash when you run a 32-bit application on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or of Windows Server 2008 R2. The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products. As you know, HP printer is a third party product, Microsoft has less information about third party products. So, please backup the system to avoid any unexpected issue. Thanks for your understanding! This hotfix is listed as being included in SP1: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=269 This should give you some level of confidence. I would personally consider applying SP1 (again you should backup, and test carefully).Don

Thank you, I too downloaded the list of updates included in service pack 1 and searched for the KB article number, and confirmed that this update is inside the service pack. We will begin backup of our server, and testing the service pack. Thank you everyone for your responses.

I have installed Windows updates and at the moment the my splwow64.exe details are Current version: 6.1.7601.17514 date: 20/11/2010. The hotfix that is proposed at the KB 979681 is old (version: 6.1.7600.20623 date: 21/01/2010). I am speaking right now with MS Support and they are telling me that there are no new hotfixes or updates for the version that i currently have. I am still having the problems, here are other threads of people having similar problems: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/9be5bfaf-a3e8-43a2-a9e2-2d9af0967d23/ http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/es-ES/windowsserveres/thread/b843bce5-6d13-43b9-9000-d3f468a091db http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/es-ES/Offtopic/thread/90a83eb2-a221-47ad-afb4-870f83ef42acXL5

We have the same problem with splwow64.exe on fully patched Win 2003 x64 servers in our Citrix farm. The problem occurs only when we use printers on a Win 2008 R2 printserver. If I use my old 2003 x64 printserver I have no problems. splwow64.exe is version 5.2.3790.3959 date 17/02 2007. I see the problem as very high CPU usage for the splwow64.exe while printing. I' moving to 2008 R2 Citrix servers soon so I hope this will be resolved then for me atleast.
