Add alias for my server in DNS
Hi, I need the web applications on my server (for instance: http://Homeserver/MyASPNETApplication) to be also available as http://AnotherName/MyASPNETApplication). I think I should add a cname alias in DNS, but I don't know how. My server gets its IP address from my home router. It's a Windows 2008 R2 server. How should I accomplish this? Regards, Nils

Go to your DNS server and create a new zone domain.com (the new one you want) and then create an empty A record with the IP address of the server. You server should have a static IP address. Where should I create the new zone? I did it in Forward Lookup Zones. My server has a static IP address (192.168.0.1) as well and I used it to create an empty A record. But where should I put the alias name (AnotherName) that I want to use in the URL to my web application?

Hi Ngruson, Both CNAME & Alias should be added in your forward lookup zone.. therefore in your forward lookup zone you should see your domain name ? e.g www.ida.gov.sg in the dns forward lookup zone you should see ida.gov.sg that will be the DN <domain name> so e.g if i want my server to be tagged in the DNS server all i need is just create the server CNAME under ida.gov.sg so the FQDN will be <server name.ida.gov.sg> Therefore after creating the CNAME the you should see a A-record under the DN <domain name> right click on the a-record file select > properties > input the ip address and TTL <time to live>. After you are done with the configuration. kindly performed nslookup to test if you are able to lookup the requested entries which you have created. Hope that explains. But if you need further assistance please post more.. i will be glad to assist you :)Guowen Su | CCNA, CCIP, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP, CEH | http://www.microsoft.com/en/sg/default.aspx Our Goal? Hello again, if you have proceeded like that by creating a new zone and an empty A record with the wanted IP address, there is no need to use CNAMES.
