Active directory Domain controller question
I have a domain controller that just died. I am sure it was the first one that was put up in the forest but I was not there. I moved the roles off of this server several months ago becaus it was acting funny. Is this going to be a poblem other then the fact that I am down one domain controller. I still have 2 left and plan on rebuilding his one tomorrow. This is a windows 2003 domain. Thanks,

I have two more identical domain controllers. About 6 months ago I moved all of the roles to one of the other domain controllers and made one a GC.

If you've moved the roles and have another GC then it sounds like you should be ok. Some other things to consider. - Ensure there is at least one other DNS server. - Consider making all your DCs GCs. No reason not to in a single domain forest. - Perform the metadata cleanup of the dead DC (see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/216498) - Clear out any lingering DNS records pointing to the dead DC (e.g. NS records). - Remove the DC server object from AD Sites and Services Tony

Hi there, As tony suggested , metadata clean up and clearing lingering objects should be done in high priority.

Thanks Tony. I thought I was ok. I try to make sure I am safe. All my DC's are GC's and DNS as well. I am going to clean up he metadata. I have had to do this in the past. Thanks,
