Active Directory - Home Folder Migration

Hi,

I am unsure whether this is the correct area for this post. Please re-direct me if that is the case.

The scenario is that we are migrating our file server to an upgraded OS.

When it comes to the Users home directory share. How do I go about redirecting the share location without Active Directory automatically creating the folder in the new share location.

For example, if I change a single users home directory location and the folder is already created in the new location it will prompt me that the folder already exists in that location would you like to give this user full access etc...

But if I do change more than one users home folder location then it does not give me that option and once changed it will duplicate the folder that is already within the new share.

The question is - How/Can I change multiple batched user home directory locations without Active Directory automatically duplicating the existing user folders?

Thank you in advance.

Hi DarryUC,

Thanks for your post.

May I ask that what's your operation system? Is it a domain controller?

If so, how about try the following workaround?

Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.

And You could try to use GPO to do Folder Redirection for existent data. There is a setting: Granting exclusive rights to special folders.

Hi Mary Dong,

Thank you very much for your reply and suggestions.

I do apologise but I have amended the subject from 'Redirection' to 'Migration'.

I appreciate the links but the issue isn't how we are going to migrate the data and retain all permissions.

More specifically to do with bulk changing the path of all of the users home directory folders.

In doing this, AD automatically creates those user folders when using the variable %username% as the UPN name of that user.

How am I able to change the home directory path of all users without AD creating the folder in the new path. So when we do migrate the data over their aren't duplicate user folders?

Thank you in advance.

Hi DarrylJC,

Based on my understanding, you need to bulk change Home folders to new path(not the default path created by AD), right?

If so, maybe you could check the following articles. It's about Bulk Changes for Home Folder Paths.

Hope it is helpful.
