Accessible but hidden shared drives?
We use an application that requires some templates and created reports to be stored on a shared drive, but we don't want the users being able to see the shared drive as part of their computer (XP Pro). So the users need read/write access to P: for instance, but we don't want P: showing up for direct access. Can this be done? We're using Server 2003 for the networking. Thanks.

Hello trying naming the share with a $ sign at the end of the share name such as Data$ or P$ etc. I would have suggested also to use ABE but since the user have Read/Write will not workIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

How does that work? Does the $ tell explorer that the share shouldn't show up?

Yes. The $ will add the hidden attribute to the share Users will have to mannualy browse to the share \\servername\Sharename$ to see the share Isaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

Hi Dave, Thanks for posting here. Isaac is right , you might like to add a dollar sign ($) at the end of the share name to create a hidden shared folder on your server . For further description, please take time to read the article below: Please notice that the article is applied to windows XP , but the method could also be correctly performed on windows server 2003 and later version: How to create and delete hidden or administrative shares on client computers http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314984 Thanks. Thanks, this should solve the problem. It will take a while for our tech department to actually do it of course.
