Access problem
I have all the printers in my organization installed on one server. In DNS i have an alias cname "P" pointing to that server so users can navigate to \\p and click on the printers they wish to use. I want to move all the printers to another server. I installed the printer drivers on another server and set up the printer shares with the exact same names. I went into DNS and changed the cname record for "P" to point to the new server. When i try to access the printers on the new server by navigating to \\p i get the following error:"\\P is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. You were not connected because a duplicate name exists on the network. If joining a domain, go to system in control panel to change the computer anme and try again. If joining a workgroup, choose another workgroup name."There is no other computer with the same name!I can navigate to \\newserver and the printer show up with no problems. Only when i try to access \\P is when i get the problem.Any suggestions? A+, N+, MCP

Hi, This issue may occur if Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for new DNS CNAME was not registered. Please try the following command first. setspn -A host/ your_ALIAS_name computername Note: Replace "your_ALIAS_name" and "computername" with your system settings. For more information about SPNs and CNAME, please refer to the following article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870911 If the issue continues, this issue may also if DisableStrictNameChecking was not set or was changed. Please refer to the following article to check the Registry. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281308 Please also note, DNS may take some time to take effect. Run "ipconfig /flushdns" on client computer and wait some time to check again. Thanks

I tried all of your suggestions. Now when I try to access \\P a window comes up with Printer and Faxes. I can click on that and see all the printers that are on the print server but I can't connect to them. When i connect to \\p i do not see the shares or printers in the same way that i would when i go directly to \\servername When i connect directly to \\servername I can see a list of share and the printers. What is weird is that if i try to access \\P from the server the printers are installed on it comes up perfectly no problem, I can see all the shares and printers listed right there. A+, N+, MCP

Hi,I would suggest to delete the Cname and create it again and also suggest flush all dns cache then try it. Also ensure that "P" is not been used alias for two different servers by mistake.Let me know if still there is problem.Regards,TilakIT Consultant

Hi, Based on my test, this kind of issue was caused by the DNS cache or delay of DNS update. Please help to collect the following information for research. 1. Please run "ipconfig /displaydns" on all involved computers to check the records for \\Pand \\servername 2. Modifying Registry DisableStrictNameChecking needs restart to take effect. Please try torestart andtest. Please note, setspn -A host may need to run again on DNS server. 3. Please try to create a new CNAME record for your printer server and test. Note: New CNAME may takeseveral hours to work on all computersafter all correct configurations. 4. Are all involved computers in Domain? Thanks

After rebooting the server \\P started working on XP machines. A few hours later it strarted working on Vista machines. The delay seems a little odd but everything is working now. THanks! A+, N+, MCP
