A required CD/DVD Drive Device Driver is missing.
I'm trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a Dell Precision T5500. I have last year's model T5500 with it running fine. I got a new one this year and am getting an error during installation, "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step" Any suggestions for working around this error? I have a hard time knowing what exactly is causing the problem. I thought it might be my SAS controller, and I put the SAS Driver disc in the DVD drive and it reads it fine, but fails to fix the problem. That tells me two things, 1) it's not the SAS controller (not that it would be since my DVD drive is plugged into the onboard SATA controller) and 2) there's nothing apparently wrong with the DVD drive since it reads discs and loads drivers fine...leaving me confused. Just in case, I plugged in a USB DVD drive and get the same error when trying to install windows from that device. I've read a lot of posts about this error, and so far nothing has looked like it would solve my particular problem.

Hello, sorry, but as driver problems belong to the vendor, in your case Dell, there support is responsible and not Microsoft.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

I tried, they don't support server OS on this computer. I was hoping to get some help trying to identify which device isn't being recognized. It says it's a CD/DVD drive device driver, but it reads from the DVD drive just fine any time i put in a driver disc. Is there a way within windows to find out exactly what isn't being recognized so i can search out the appropriate driver?

Have you installed the mobo chipset? You can try the vista or windows 7 chipset drivers but of course no guarantees. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional Microsoft MVP [Windows]

Hi, Thanks for posting here. Could you discuss in detail that what’s the particular step during installation when encountered this prompt ? have you already loaded driver for storage devices? Provide mass storage drivers. If your manufacturer has supplied a separate driver file, save the file to a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or Universal Serial Bus (USB) flash drive in either the root directory of the media or in one of the following folders: amd64 for x64-based computers or ia64 for Itanium-based computers. To provide the driver during Setup, on the disk selection page, click Load Driver (or press F6). You can browse to locate the driver or have Setup search the media. Meanwhile, please take look the workaround in the KB article below and check if this issue would persist during installation: CD/DVD drive does not appear in Windows Vista, or you receive this error during Windows Vista setup after booting from the DVD http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952951 Thanks.
