A Domain Controller Installation Question
Hello, I'm kind of new to server Admin, and in general I have a few doubts concerning domain name.First of all I'm working on a development team, but in order to continue I need to keep certain things clear. When I'm installing the Domain controller service on WinServer 2008, it asks me to input my domain name. Ok Here are my doubts:*Some say that if it is for local administration you should put any name here for instance 'AnyName.local', but how does this limit myself to expand later if I want to host my hown web page for example or use Exchange.*Other people tell me that I need to write the Domain name that I own, for security reasons. they say that in case I want to expose myself to the internet, they mean my whole network or something I think. In that case I should put 'MyOwnDomain.com'.Now almost any bussines buy this dot com/org/biz domains, but just for the purposeof web page hosting right?. If this is the case should I use this domain name that I bought and put it in the domain controler? and if I do should I use the email adress that I bought with the domain for my users in AD Users? for later use with SMTP Relay? I heard that when you pay for this kind of domain name, you are just paying for using the name, that its not actually yoursDoes it make any diference?Let's Finish This

Hello*Some say that if it is for local administration you should put any name here for instance 'AnyName.local', but how does this limit myself to expand later if I want to host my hown web page for example or use Exchange.*Other people tell me that I need to write the Domain name that I own, for security reasons. they say that in case I want to expose myself to the internet, they mean my whole network or something I think. In that case I should put 'MyOwnDomain.com'.It is not recommended to have your internal Active Directory Domain name to be the same as your external web domain name for security reason. You can use the .local or .internal or you can buy a separate domain name for your active directory..But the choice to use either of these will depend on you after reviewing your security concerns. To expand or hosting your own webpage or Exchange mail server, you can always use dns to route your smtp to your external name etc. So this shouldn't be a problem at all. For example, I can have a mydomain.com as internal and have abc.com as external. I can route my exchange to use the abc..com Now almost any bussines buy this dot com/org/biz domains, but just for the purposeof web page hosting right?. If this is the case should I use this domain name that I bought and put it in the domain controler? and if I do should I use the email adress that I bought with the domain for my users in AD Users? for later use with SMTP Relay? Businesses buy .com etc for many reasons one of which is webhosting.. Once you buy a domain name it is use for as long as you keep paying your yearly feeIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE

So you mean I can just use a DNS server, and what about mail, if I don't want to use Exchange, but just use the email accounts that I bought (with my yearly fee)I can simply configure SMTP Services on WinServer 2008, and IIS SMTP Relay to use those accounts right? So if I have MyDomain.com as internal and abc.com as internet, and I bought 100 '@abc.com' mail account, what happen if I'm creating a new AD User and his login is 'freddyccix', should I specify a new email account?for instance 'freddyccix@abc.com' cause' DC suggests "freddyccix@MyDomain.com"If I do this and use the accounts with the internet domain for mail porpuses. is there a problem with other Microsoft Server Solutions? likeSharepoint, or Team Foundation Server, wich reference the AD User Object instead of a static email address when I'm doing notifications for instance? This are my doubts cause' we are going to use mail notification in our solution, and we could go either way, ( static email address or AD User object)Let's Finish This

HelloMS Exchange will be able to match your Active Directory users account to your email.. But for external mail source that does not work in collaboratin with AD you will need to use that email providers tools..They might have a AD API to integrate both.Talk to your provider host, they might be able to creat MX RecordsIsaac Oben MCITP:EA, MCSE
