AD account lockouts with Office 2010
I am in the middle of a staged upgrade rollout for Office 2010. I am installing this with one of 2 methods: pre-installed on a new workstation or in-place upgrade from Office 2003. The clients that I have installed Office 2010 are experiencing account lockouts several times a day. I've followed several procedures to find the cause & have discovered that they are getting "BadPwd" errors when they launch an Office 2010 app - Word, Excel, etc. The computers are a mix of WinXP with SP3 and Win7. Office 2010's patch level is maintained by a WSUS server here. I hope there's some help to be found out there. Jonathan

Hello, never heard/realized about lockout in AD based on Office applications. Account lockout is based on wrong passwords and the configured policy. So how is the account lockout policy set and where is it linked to? Please use the account lockout tools for further investigation: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=7AF2E69C-91F3-4E63-8629-B999ADDE0B9E&displaylang=en http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738772(WS.10).aspx http://www.pbbergs.com/windows/articles/UserAccountLockoutTroubleshooting.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/109626 http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/tags/account+lockout/Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Thanks for the reply. I have already been utilizing the tools and info you refer to in your links. That's how I have discovered the source of the trouble so far. The account lockout policy is set via the Default Domain Policy in GPO, with one minor tweak: I recently increased the bad password count to 10. It is linked in the AD org tree to cover all workstations & users, I haven't moved it from its default location. I've worked closely with one of the users and have verified that the BadPwd count increments whenever she launches an Office 2010 app. I suspect that there is a background process triggered by this that perhaps does a licensing check or perhaps attempt a connection to Office Online. I haven't checked that closely yet. Please let me know what you think. Jonathan

Hello Jonathan, It seems you find the root cause of the issue. However, the issue related to the office 2010. So it more benefit to ask the question in office forum. Office IT Pro General Discussions URL: <http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/officeitpro/threads>
