I have an existing production AD 2003 domain, and now would like a true forest with losing my domain. so, could I create a new domain called: rootAD.FQDN and the join my exsiting domains to it? is that possible? abnd if it is? how does the DNS name space get effected? Thanks -Nex6

Based on my knowledge, there is no way to move a domain to another forest. In your case, you can create a forest root and then migrate the objects. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Unfortunately, its not that easy. You cannot simply logically unplug a domain from one forest and add it to another. You'll need to perform a migration of the domain. ADMT is the tool that you can use. I would start by reading this article.
