4 Gb Ram Installed in the Server showing only 3 Gb available
We have installed windows 2003 standard in a new IBM server with 4 GB ram installed. But the system is showing only 3 Gb of available memory. Please explain technically why is this so? We also have another DELL server with the same OS installed and it is showing all the 4 GB of available memory. Please also explain the difference. Where is the balance 1 GB gone ? An immediate reply would be highly appreciated.

Hi,For a 32bit architectureserver, you need to enable the /PAE option in your system boot.ini file to extend memory beyond the 4-gigabyte (GB) range.Pleaserefer to this KB article:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283037Best Regards,Wilson JiaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

already tried the same. Still no affect. Also reboot the server, but no changes take place.

Modify the BOOT.INI file with the memory switch. [boot loader] timeout=3 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /3gb/ C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Hello DKING54,I don't see anthing in your boot.ini that would affect the amount of memory available to Windows. The /3gb affects the addressing of user mode versus kerenal mode but this doesn't affect over all memory. Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights

Hello a_halan,This is dependant on the processor that is being used, the chipset being used and bios options that are enabled and available. ( Chipset and Processor have to support this)929605The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installedhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929605Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights
