2012 R1 Mounted Volumes within a Share cannot be access via share

Hi Guys

I've installed a new VM running Windows 2012 R1 to be used as a file server, deduplication will be used

I have a folder called c:\share on the server, and within here i mount volumes for each dept (eg :tax, corporate etc...), and then just share c:\share as "share"

so the path will be \\server\share\tax as an example.

the mounting works 100%, and i can access the volumes locally on the server.

i however cannot access them off the network, either by \\server\share\mount_point  or \\server\c$\share\mount_point, all i get is access is denied.

Any share thats created that does'nt have a mounted volume works fine.

I've even created test volumes (with default permissions) and mounted them, and they cannot be accessed via the network.

I have double checked access on the volumes etc...

have i forgot something? I've done this many times on 2003/2008, and no issues...

Hi,

Did you enable offline files on the map drive? If so, please try to disable offline files to see if you can access the volumes. You could also try to access the shared folder using IP address.

In the meantime, please check if you have correct permission to access the shared folder.

Hi

I re-installed the servers OS, and all was good.

But the moment i join it to the domain, the mount points stop working.

I suspect there is something in the the default domain policy that is causing the problem...

Hi,

How did you mount volumes? Did you use Windows Explorer or the default domain policy?

I mount them using disk management

If i create normal shares on a volume, i have no problems, its just mounted voilumes...

On the domain, i tried creating a new volume and this does'nt work either.

I'm currently running a Win2003 (joined to same domain) on ESX4.0 using mount pounts, and no problems.

The new Win 2012 File server is running on ESX 5.5, i doubt this would make a difference.

I found the problem, its a vmware issue.

you need to disable hot plug capability for the Guest VM.

To disable HotPlug capability using the vSphere Client:

  1. Connect to the ESXi/ESX host or vCenter Server using the vSphere Client.
  2. Power off the virtual machine.
  3. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
  4. Click the Options tab.
  5. Click General > Configuration Parameters > Add Row.
  6. Insert a new row with the name devices.hotplug and a value of false.
  7. Power on the virtual machine.

To disable HotPlug capability by editing the .vmx file:

  1. Power off the virtual machine.
  2. Access the ESXi/ESX service console using an SSH client.
  3. Open the virtual machine configuration file (.vmx) in a text editor. The default location is:

    /vmfs/volumes/datastore_name/vm_name/vm_name.vmx
  4. Add the line:

    devices.hotplug = "false"

Note: This setting does not interfere with HotPlug CPU/memory.
  5. Save and close the file.
  6. Power on the virtual machine.
