2003 domain controller slow dns forwarders
The server was setup for a different gateway than the clients. It appears it was a problem with the gateway. Changed the server to the same gateway and things are performing better. Just did that this morning and still monitoring to be sure. Thanks for the reply.

I have a windows server 2003 standard server in a small office network setup as a domain controller. I have the dns forwarders setup for opendns servers. my clients when trying to access the internet have slow dns queries, 2+ seconds for each query when using the 2003 server as the dns server. is i open nsloopup on a client, change the server to a opendns server and do a lookup, the response is almost immediate. how can i get my dns queries going through the windows dns server to speed. our internet access is unnecessarily slow by having to use our domain controller as the dns server. the server is used as a file server with little activity, so it's not overloaded. there is plenty of free memory, the cpu rarely goes above ~5%, hard drive activity is low. how can i speed this up or work around the domain controller for dns without breaking our local network activity.

Hello, Start by that: Update your NIC card driver Disable all security softwares that you have on the DC Make sure that the public DNS servers are set as forwarders and not in IP settings of the DC Make sure that the DC has a single IP address and NIC card enabled Run dnscmd /clearcache command Once done, check results.
