Outlook has always created a .OST file for calendaring operations.reventthat:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\OSTValue name: NoOstValue type: REG_DWORDValue data: 1 := create an initial OST for calendar caching and the user can't switch to cached-mode 2 := don't create an initial OST and the user can't switch to cached-mode 3 := don't create an initial OST and the user CAN use cached-mode later if they want toIf it still works for OL2007 (I don't know that it does), change the"11.0" to "12.0" in the keys path to the value.I expect that it must work somehow because running Outlook on Citrixdoesn't allow the use of cached-mode.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

I'll try the registry edit. Do you know the reasoning behind the OST file for calendaring?
October 15th, 2009 3:33pm

it keeps a local cache of calendar information so that it can still pop a reminder even if you're offline for some reason.

Registry edit did not work. However, the user is on Office 2007.

Why is it important that Outlook not create a local OST with the calendar cache in it?I checked a couple systems and don't see that regkey on Outlook 2007. Though I do see it on the Outlook 2010 preview build.

Not a big deal if it an OST for Calendaring. But I suspect there is something else going on in the case of the 83 MB OST.OST files tend to get corrupted and can increase logon and logoff times.

83MB is big compared to 513K for sure. it may be big compared to the user's calendar as well, although a few message attachments to appointments could easily produce an 83MB OST without much actual calendar data. an 800MB OST for just calendaring I might begin to be concerned about, but you've piqued my curiosity and I'm going to keep an eye on what's typical for that file going forward.

If you have people that are invited to lots of meetings, the inviters love to send large attachments in their invitations, andthe invitee never removes the meetings from their calendar it's prettyeasy to reach an 83MB calendar folder.Check the size of the Calendar folder in the user's mailbox. Does itproximate the size of the OST?>OST files tend to get corrupted and can increase logon and logoff times. PST files are more likely to be damaged and need attention duringlogon. If you're running Outlook 2007 you should install MS OfficeSP2. It goes a long way in improving number of times OST/PST filesneed repair, and the amount of time it takes to repair them.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
