what to backup in Exchange 2010 with Windows server R2 (Windows Server Backup)
Hi, We have a Standard Exchange 2010 server with MB, CAS, HT. We are using Windows Server R2 and want to use the built in backup The installation (of Exchange) is in C:\Program Files, logs in D:\Logs and DB is in E:\DB1 What folders/items etc do we need to backup. Currently doing a back of E:\DB1, D:\Logs and a separate backup of system state. Do we need to backup C:\Program Files or C:\Windows ?? Anything else that I need to take into consideration? Thanks

Backing up the files in the database and log folders is not effective unless you are taking the database(s) offline during the backup (otherwise the files are in use and can't be backed up.) Even then, it's not the recommended way (as it causes an unnecessary outage and doesn't do any checking of the data.) Realistically you want to take an Exchange-aware VSS backup, which can be done with the database(s) online. You can do it with Windows Server Backup (built-in) or one of the many 3rd party backup products. This would also clear the transaction logs generated by Exchange which would otherwise eventually fill up the hard drive. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876874.aspx Also, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124780(EXCHG.80).aspx (for Exchange 2007 but generally applies) Backing up the Program Files, C:\Windows and system state isn't useful unless you plan on actually restoring them. It comes down to your recovery plans. In most simple configurations you would just reinstall the OS and Exchange (potentially with Exchange setup's /disasterrecovery switch) and any other apps that were installed.

Thanks you. I will use http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124780(EXCHG.80).aspx (for Exchange 2007 but generally applies) i wonder why Microsoft hasn't yet published anything Exchange 2010 specific (that is what I was trying to ask).

Regarding to Backup in Exchange 2010, I recommend you also refer to the following article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877018(v=exchg.140).aspx Thanks.
