warning limit for size of public folders only 2GB?
Hi Guys, we have an exchange 2003 enterprise server with all updates installed and we would like to set warning limits on public folders, it will limit us to 2gb, is this for the actual size of the folder itself or is it for the files inside the folder. As we have found info on people saying that the limit is 16gb then 75gb with registry edits etc we have done all the suggested edits but still no better. So does the 2gb limit mean that you cannot have a public folder of more than 2gb in size, if you can then why can the lmit be only set at 2gb. Any info on this would be much appreciated as cannot find any definate info about this i.e. what the size limit is if there is one, etc.Regards.Chris.

That is a posting limit per folder. 2GB is a gui limitation. You can use adsiedit.msc to raise it further if required.http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/09/20/428965.aspxInterpreting Status of Storage Quotas via Exchange Management Shell This is for mailbox servers, but the same applies to pf stores. If you look via adsiedit, under the properties of the public folder store object Configuration, CN=Services, CN=Microsoft Exchange, CN= OrgNameCN=Administrative Groups, CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT), CN=Servers... then drill down to the server and then information store and then storage group and then the specific store.Look for those values:mDBOverHardQuotaLimitmDBStorageQuotaand set as desired.

Hi Andy, i have seen this explanation before, if we go to ADSI EDIT then connect to the exchange server there is no Configuration CN, services etc so i have never been able to try this, maybe i am doing it wrong but i cannot get to that part, could you describe again in more detail how to get to that if possible.Regards.Chris.

Sure, right click the ADSIEDIT object and select Connect To...Under the Select Well Known Naming Context Pull down menu, choose "Configuration" and hit Ok.Alternatively, use the Sites and Services MMC and under View, check the Show Services Node option

Hi Andy, thanks for the help, have found the right bit now, is there a maximum the limits can be set to i.e. will it only let me go so high or can you set any limit, they wanted a warning limit on a public folder of 75gb, is that possible? Thanks again.Chris.

Hi again, i have found the correct entries under public folder store, they are set to syntax - integer, Vaue <not set> how would we then set up so the limit was 75gb and not the default 2gb? also would we need to do anything with message size limit etc? also which one of the 3 do we need to edit? Thanks again.Chris.

the guy who asked us to set up the public folder wants a warn limit of 75gb, is that not adviseable? what are the recommended limits?Cheers.

Well, 2GB most likely is the recommended value. :)The 2GB limit was the largest size an ansipst could get in older versions of Outlook, so that limit was probably translated to pf sizes as well. However, once public folders get beyond that, they doget harder and harderto open and task the server more ( Opening, changing views etc....), I wouldnt go too far beyond that myself.

Hi,When the public folder size reach to 75 GB,we shall recieve a warning alert,is that true? Then we need a monitor application to monitor certain event in event log or just use System Center Operation Manager to create a rule to monitor the threshold value.Regards,Xiu
