setting up for external domains
Hi, in a test environment I have set up my internal domain as *****.corp I want to receive and send emails for *****.org DNS for *****.org hosted by Register.com Changed MX record to mailserver.******.corp Changed SPF to same server. Go to MX Lookup and correct mail server is picked up but fails SMTP diagnostics with this: The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found I can send emails externally, but cannot receive. I can telnet into server internally, but cannot externally, yes port forwarding is configured correctly. I have chaged mail servers often before, but servers were always named *******.******.org and everything just worked. Now that I have an internal domain and an external one, seems to have broken stuff. The records at Register.com all have an unchangeable field of .*******.org in front of every record, giving the me the feeling that I cannot point to anything other than the .org domain? Perhaps I would be better of setting up my own DNS records on my Domian controller instead of using the Register.com DNS servers? Also, OWA is only looking at the .corp domain, how do I change it to look at .org domain? I can see whare to change it, but it only shows .corp as the domain. Yes I have got the .org domain added in as an accepted domain. Thanks for any help. Regards Peter.

hi,you must create accepted domain and email address policy for your domain that is called ******.org in your exchange organization.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996910.aspxhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124401.aspxand mx record forwarding must be done to your real ip address. and also you must allow correct ports on your firewall, modem, router etc to communicate with your exchange server in your organization.regards,Exchange - MVP | www.cozumpark.com | www.mumincicek.com

Hi, thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned this beofre, this is on Server 2008R2, and exchange 2010. I have created the accepted domain and created the email address policy. The internal domain is .corp, the external domain is .org I have created an email account, it is using the .org address. I can send emails externally with this account. I have edited the receive connector to allow anonymous connections also. The MX record is pointing to my mail server, when I check the MX record for the domain name ***** .org it points to the mail server that I have entered in the MX record. When I do the SMTP diagnosis it fails. Using www.mxtoolbox.com I have port forwarding enabled from my external IP to the internal IP od the Mail server for ports 25, 80, 443, 995. Web server is working fine. All these settings work fine when the mail server is named with the .org domain. Now it is in the .corp domain. Regards, Peter.

I suppose I'm "allowed" to replay to myself? nslookup seems fine, I type in set type=mx and type in *****.org and my mail server name is returned. It must be a DNS issue though because I cannot telnet to my the server by name but I can by my WAN IP address using port 25, and get the mail servers name etc. What's going on here? By the way OWA is fine, just using incorrect credentials when logging on. Regards Peter.

I'm going to talk to myself again........... seems there was no need for me to use *****.corp as the server name in the MX record, if I just used the servername.*****.org it was fine. I was using the full name of the server as it appears in DNS internally. Now I'm getting all my test emails ;-) and can now get stuck in and have a good poke around in exchange 2010. It's been a good learning exercise anyway. Cheers, Peter.

Yes, we shall use the internet domain name in the MX record. Glad you solved the issue by yourself, and thanks for sharing it at here References: MX record Hostname How to setup your MX record Notes: For the questions on the Exchange 2010, please use Exchange Server 2010 forum which would be the best place for seeking the resolution, thanks!
