removing Exchange 2003 Front End and Backend after Exchange 2007 installation
Hi Everyone, I have 4 Administrative groups, each containing 1 Front End and 1 Backend Exchange 2003 with SP2 server in different geographies. Now organisation has decided to upgrade mailing system to Exchange 2007 SP1 and consolidate all mailboxes on single location. Once all mailboxes are moved to Exchange 2007, all adminstrative groups will vanish and only Exchange 2007 servers at one location will remain. One of the Administrative group is successfully moved to exchange 2007 with SP1 and also removed exchange 2003 from that site. Now all mailboxes from 2nd administrative groups are moved to Exchange 2007. I want to remove Exchange 2003 FE and BE from that administrative group. How should I proceed. I had moved all public folders, no user mailboxes on backend server, no free/busy , no Address book generation server on Exchange 2003. Any idea, will just be sufficient to uninstall Front End server first and then Backend server from 2nd administrative group? MukeshMukesh S

Removing the server whether its a front end or back end, most of the time the steps are the same. Now, is Back End and Front End are on different Hardware? You can start Removing the server from Control Panel Check the articles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833396 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931 Gulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com

Hi, I had already gone through these articles, my question was, apart from above mentioned points, do I need to take any special care while removing FE and BE? ____________________________________________ Mukesh Sutar, MCITP Exchange 2007Mukesh S

If you covered all the points in this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905(EXCHG.80).aspx. Nothing else.

Yep, as mentioned before the links are good to ensure you have covered everything. So your right in your approach, remove FE box (usually v easy), then wait a short while and then remove the BE box (sometimes a problem with system mailboxes/PFs etc). I completed my removal this way without issue.Stew
