remove exchange from my domain
I have switched over to office 365 and successfully transferred everyone with new profile away from our internal exchange.

Our previous setup was using exchange 2007 as main server, it also had an old exchange 2003 that was registered but all services had been migrated to the new server.

With the switchover I simply unplugged their network cable because they were stopping me registering my users on office 365 (the same email address was being used.)

I now want to remove exchange, and the exchange servers from our network. Ideally I don't want to put them back in the network, just simply remove all knowledge of them from the network, recycle the newer server and scrap the old 2003 machine.

Through AD I have previously removed the computer for each server as they were causing me issue with the changeover... All of our system seems to work fine as it is so don't want to upset things.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Since you've already done the migration, you should proceed as follows to simply remove the exchange server from your existing environment:

With the server is still attached to the domain, go to add/remove programs and do an exchange uninstall as you would with any application.

Once all services are uninstalled, remove the computer from the domain via system control panel. That should eliminate most of the records from AD. If there are stragglers, then you should do a manual removal from AD. You never want to just unplug and manually remove, there are still lots of DNS records, registry entries, etc. pointing to various internal exchange services that will cause you issues.

You will also (and probably already have done so) need to remove any associated MX records and A records from your domain supplier and/or point them to the new 365 server.

additionally, you should follow this link which details the removal process:

Good luck!
