What is the recomended disk space needed for transactionlogs and is there disk performance requirements? Eric

Check out this linkExchange 2007 Mailbox Server Role Storage Requirements Calculator:http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/01/15/432207.aspxLogs should at least be RAID 1 if not better. I always size them about 1/3 of the database size. Keep in mind though, when performing a migration your logs are going to increase in size b/c of the migrating content.SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS

hi,an addition to Bardapony, please store your databases and log files on different disks. so your performance will be better...regards,Mumin CICEK | Exchange - MVP | www.cozumpark.com | www.mumincicek.com

Currently we have 9 databases on three volumes that are each RAID10 and 9 transaction logs on three volumes that are each RAID1. All disks are 300GB fiber channel. We are running out of drive space on our databases and are trying to be creative since weare running out of drives to expand. If we look at the transaction log drives we are only using 8 GB of 1.8TB of raw disk space.Composed ofsix 300GB drives making three RAID1 volumes. We are considering using a single raid 1 volume with 4 partitions. Thee for the existing volumes and 1 for the new one. Use our last 4 disks available to create a 900GB Raid5 or 600GB Raid10 to acompany new log volume. Our concern is what seems to be a huge amount of wasted space in our transaction logs.

I would have 9 seperate luns for the database with Raid 10.I would then configure 9 seperate luns for the transaction logs consiting of at least Raid 1 if not raid 5. Figure in how big your databases our and your logs should be about a third. Probably left.Check here on help sizingExchange 2007 Mailbox Server Role Storage Requirements Calculator:http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/01/15/432207.aspxSF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS

You can combine all transaction log files to single LUN or smaller LUNs created on your storage, but the disk performance will be decreased. But if you're out of disk space you ought to do something. Is it possible to add disk direct in to the server instead of using a SAN?Are you running a clustered Exchange?lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Inour environment our logs are only 1GB for each database. This size is consistant across all our logs and databases. Our databases are on average 100GB.It appears everyone has suggested 1/3 or 33% of the DB size but ours is consistantly only1%. Logs are backed up every day and a full backup on the weekend. I don't understand why our logs are so miniscule but they are. We support 1700 users with no quota and the largest mailbox is 17GB. We do have third party SPAM filtering in front of Exchange which could be causing the logs to be smaller but i would expect that to be common practice.

Run the Exchange Sizer tool I posted above and see what that perdicts for log luns. Then add a bit to it. ;)SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS
