prevent users from connecting to ex2010 when conducting scheduled maintenance
Hi, Sometimes we want to do maintenance work on Exchange 2010 How do I prevent users from connecting via MS Outlook, OWA etc Thanks

Scheduled maintenance? To do what? Exchange is best left alone. I have servers that the only thing I do with is install Windows Updates and reboot the server. That is it. Exchange doesn't require extensive work if setup correctly. Otherwise your only options are to stop the Exchange services or start changing the firewall configuration. I agree with Simon. The connection point in exchange 2010 is Client Access Server and maintenances on CAS of generic nature(patching, rebooting, conf change) doesn't take much time so making a conscious attempt to prevent the users won’t help anyway.... Any scheduled maintenance on mailbox or any other role can be easily communicated ahead of time so doing something like preventing users to connect would be an overkill. But still if you want to do that then use the load balancer for CAS to establish something like that, don’t do anything on CAS server.Regards, Pushkal MishrA

Well, we have MB, HT, CAS on one server. Are their on CAS services that one could stop - to prevent the clients from attempting to connect?

Hi BirenHaria, I would not suggest that stop one service to forbid the users to connect to the exchange server. Which method of the outlook client used to connect to exchange server, mapi, pop3, smtp. We could disabeled the feature on the mailbox level. Yet, we also could disable the RPC client access service of the server. In my opinion, we do not need to do the operation. Regards! Hi Birenharia, We could disable it through EMC. mailbox -> mailbox features Or, we could diable it through EMS. Set-casmailbox -mapienabled $false -identity "domain.com/ouname/username" Regards! Hi BirenHaria, Then you could use the Powershell through EMS. Please try as below and make a test: get-casmailbox |Set-casmailbox -mapienabled $false Some information for you : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124754.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125264.aspx Regards!
