owa out of office assistant
Windows 2008 sp2 using Exchange 2007 sp2 environment. User B has an out of the office message setup. User B must receive all of User A email - done via forwarding using transport rules. Sender sends an email to User A and receives an out of office message from User B. Anyway of stopping/controlling this so the sender doesn't get User B out of the office message? Thanks in advance

I can see this is a thinker. Doesn't exchange know the email is a forward? If so, can it not be checked so an out of office message isn't sent? Still trying to find an answer.

The only way is going to be a modification of the rules - as OOTO is simply a rule. Something along the lines of email sent to User A, stop processing all rules. That will also catch any messages sent to the second user where the first user was CC'd, but that can't be helped. The rule can either be left on all the time, or turned on and off as required when OOTO is set. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP. http://blog.sembee.co.uk , http://exbpa.com/

I'm sorry, I realized I missed an important piece of info - the rules are written on the Exchange server, under transport rules - not on the individual users account. This stops the user from changing the rules for any reason. Like your idea, needs to apply to the exchange server - don't see those options.

OOTO isn't possible on the Exchange server, so you must be using some kind of auto reply rule that you have configured to work like an OOTO message. However it will not behaving in the same way. Given how you have implemented an Out of Office message, but without using the actual OOTO engine, i don't think there is a solution for you. Confused, i'm using the OWA from Exchange - which has the out of office assistant. Thought the OWA was a part of Exchange?!? Ok - what's OOTO?

OOTO - Out of the Office. You need to be careful about what you are saying. When you refer to setting the OOTO message on the server, that does NOT usually mean OWA. When it comes to Exchange, when someone refers to configuring it on the server that is usually thought to mean you are trying to set it through the Exchange management tools as some functionality can be configured that way. If you are using OWA to set it, then you need to state that clearly. Rule management is possible through OWA, but it isn't advanced as that in Outlook. You may find it isn't possible to configure the rule set through OWA which will stop change the process to work in the way that you desire and will have to use Outlook. Seebee, my apologies. Guess I couldn't be clear because i'm not sure where the problem is coming from or where it could be controlled from. If i'm reading correctly, this can NOT be done do to the limitations of the OWA and the transport rules for Exchange 2007. Maybe someday down the road, this will be fixed. I appreciate your time.

I don't think you will be seeing this problem "fixed" because there is nothing to fix. The OOTO system is working as designed. If you mean the rules being improved in Exchange through OWA, then that gets better with each version, but I don't think OWA will ever completely replace Outlook 100%. Never used OOF personally as I couldn't see what it stood for. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP. http://blog.sembee.co.uk , http://exbpa.com/
