outlook inbox not updating when sorted by categories

We currently have an issue updating outlook inbox, (2010, 2013) using office 365

when using sort by categories, the inbox doesnt update.

i see there are new mails coming in seeing the item count increase, but the mail is not showing.

when i collaps a categorie the new mail is found.

the problem does not occur when using sort by date.

Thank you for your feedback.

Are you running your account in Exchange online mode or cached mode?

Frankly, I received the such kind of report before. Somebody reported that in Outlook if inbox/Shared mailbox is sorted by "Categories" then new emails won't be displayed in Inbox. During our research we found that this might be an known issue with Exchange. Someone has submitted that and our exchange team might have proceed with hotfix request.

Hope this issue may fix in next hotfix publish. Thanks.

As a workaround until there's a fix, what happens if you assign a category, say ". new", to every incoming email by a rule? If sorted ascending, the leading dot should display it at the top.

Did you find a solution?  We're having the same problem, but with Exchange 2010.

The workaround mentioned to create a ".new" category worked for me.  It's a bit annoying but I'll have to live with it for now.  We started having this issue after upgrading Exchange 2010 SP3 from Update Rollup 3 to 4.
December 12th, 2013 8:50pm

I assume you mean Exchange 2013 SP3 UR 2 and 3 instead of 3 and 4, as UR4 isn't out yet.

I have a ticket open with Microsoft and will try to post back when I get a solution to this forum.

We have this exact same issue. I have spent days looking for an answer and I don't know how I didn't see this forum. For my company, this is a huge part of how we do business.

We are on Exchange 2010 SP3 RU4. Clients are Outlook 2007 fully patched. When sorting their inbox by categories new emails do not show up. They either have to reset their views, click off the inbox to another folder and then click back to inbox, or scroll all the way down (or a part of the way down) in their inbox and then scroll back up to the top.

I am very curious to when MS will release a hotfix, patch, rollup to resolve this issue. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Creating a new category as a work around (while I am glad there is one), will only infuriate our users.

December 19th, 2013 3:25am

We also use Exchange 2010 SP3 RU4 with latest updates from 16-12-2013.

We use as client Outlook 2010 sp2 and have the same issue when the email list is sorted on categories.

When sorting on another item like date the messages are show correctly as read but when the list is sorted on category read messages don't show up as read.

Everyone seems to be posting different times/dates of when this started for them. Here are our findings. Hopefully it will help somone narrown down the issue in their Environment.

For resolution our users are now either sorting by Date or they have discovered if they view the Sent Items folder and then go back to INBOX the messages are displayed correclty when sorting by category.

The thread started in June so at the time the only SP3 Update Rollup that was released was Update Rollup1 and to original Source Code. I suspect this may have been a problem in one of those releases and then re-introduced when Update Rollup v3 was released.

Update Rollup 2 was released on August 13th

Update Rollup 3 was released on November 25th

Update Rollup 4 was released on December 9th

We started receiving complaints from our users the day after we installed Update Rollup 3 on our CAS boxes to fix the IE11 and OWA Lite Issue. We are still running Update Rollup 2 on our MBX/HUB servers. I've read Release Notes for Update Rollup 4 and they mention nothing about a resolution for this.

We are on SP3 RU4 and as you mentioned in the release notes there isn't anything about a fix for this issue. I can confirm that the issue is still alive and well in SP3 RU4.

Hi,

Just to report we also have this problem.
We skipped RU3 and went from RU2 to RU4. The problems started immediately after the update.

Affected: Outlook 2010 & Outlook 2013

All online (uncached) mode. All on RDP & Citrix.
RDP Session Host servers & Citrix servers are in the same datacenter.
Tests with the desktops in the same VLAN as the Exchange VLAN give the same result.

Is there a private/public hotfix available?
Is there a case number to which I can refer to when opening a case?

Kind Regards,
Andy De Deckker

Hi All

We have the same problem here.

Everything worked fine with Exchange 2007 but as soon as we moved the mailboxes to Exchange 2010 the problem began.  Nothing was changed or installed on the client end.

It only seems to affect the messages with no categories applied.

Exchange 2010 SP3 RU4 and Outlook 2007 SP3 (12.0.0.6680.5000)

Regards

Andrew

We probably going to open a call with Microsoft as well. I was hoping that Andy de Deckker could provide us with some more information /  hotfix request number / update on his Microsoft call.

I have a user (Presidents assistant of course) who is having the exact same problem.

- Icon doesn't change from unread to read after opening an e-mail.

- Notification appears in lower right corner indicating there is a new e-mail but it does not show up in the inbox     unless we go to another folder and come back to inbox.

- She is sorting on Categories.

- Right clicking e-mail and marking as read or un-read does not change status.

The problem appeared the day after  we applied SP3 Rollup 4.  We are already in daily contact with Microsoft in regards to another problem with exchange so I'm hoping they will tell us as soon as they have a fix for this issue. I'll post if if they do.

January 14th, 2014 9:43pm

In order for our user to keep using categories our work around  is to click on any other folder in outlook then back on the Inbox.   This way she can manage e-mails the way she usually does.

We got the following answer concerning our case at MS Support. They are aware of the problem (our call was the 3th one this week for our assigned support engineer). And if i understood correctly it will be adressed in one of the upcoming monthly patches/fixes. Probably March 2014. If i get more information i will post it here.

Well, I have got more or less the same answer on our MS case.
But: the case engineer told me that it isnt scheduled to be fixed in a next Update Rollup, but it is scheduled to be fixed in a next Service Pack.
No ETA for that next Service Pack is available: only first quarter 2014
I find it a bit weird, since there isnt any info available publically about any future Service Pack for Exchange 2010
So, I hope they take it a bit serious..

Do we know if this is a problem with Exchange 2013?
That could be the reason why they might not be fully bothered about fixing this problem?

Does anyone have an update on this? I know the last note was 1st quarter of 2014. I didn't know if yesterday's patch Tuesday addressed this. I couldn't find anything on it so I assume it did not.
February 12th, 2014 4:59pm

I didn't see any fixes specifically for Exchange 2010 in patch Tuesday so I'm thinking a patch isn't out and they're still waiting for a Service Pack or roll up.   It would be great to hear from Microsoft.

Hi all,

This problem has been assigned a KB number. Too bad the solution described is just a workaround. Hopefully a real patch is supplied later on.

Doesn't look like it made it into RU5 released yesterday: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2917508

Looks like we have to wait a few more months before getting a fix.

I have tried creating a rule and the .new category and the incoming emails are moved to the category folder but that category doesn't display at the top of the view of all the emails.  Am I doing something wrong?  I have a user that has several categories but when incoming emails are delivered you don't see them in the inbox right away unless you click on another folder, etc..  Does someone have the exact steps for the rule and other settings I could try?

thanks in advance

Also wondering this, as a similar thing happens on Office365. That is, sorting by Received with new at the bottom causes the same issue. Sorting with new at the top always works. Someone else reported the same issue in ExpertsExchange: Notifications appear, new mail count is updated, but not all new mail actually appears until one moves to another folder and back again.
