while I've gotten outlook 2013 to recognize and interact with my outlook.com main account, and it shows all my aliases and subfolders under my main inbox, it does not show content for any of my aliases or subfolders under my main outlook.com e-mail account - why - how do I fix this?

Have you checked the webmail interface? Are the emails showing properly from there?

How did you configure your Outlook.com account in Outlook? Basically, we configure Outlook.com account in Outlook 2013 against Exchange ActiveSync protocol. The Mail Server portion should be m.hotmail.com. Please first check if your email account is configured correctly.

In addition, do you have all your emails cached to local? Please try setting the "Mail to keep offline" to a longer time to see the result.
