outlook 2003, on Windows 7 home premium, accessing exchange 2003, won't leave mail on server.
What's going on here? Outlook 2003, on Windows 7 home premium, accessing exchange 2003, won't leave mail on server. This is not a pop account, it is an exchange account. Discovered the issue by adding a second client for the user in question. User had attempted on his own and could not get outlook to connect with exchange. (this is all happening on a local network, no internet involved, same subnet) Outlook could not find Exchange server. hmm, I opened the browser and attempted to find it via ip address. No problem, it found the server. Ok, close the browser to try again. But, what's this, Outlook is in the process of sucking down all the mail. Great! Not sure why Outlook could not originally find the server, but, all is good now! not so fast... (I tell you this as it may be a clue in some way, I don't know) Anyway, I left feeling everything was fine. A short time later I get a call "Hey, my mail is gone off my old computer now!" It seems the outlook on the Win 7 box removed the mail from the exchange server. Again, this is not a pop account. I could not find where this option is set to only hold the mail locally on this new computer. Where can I find this flag? And on a long shot, any way to re-propagate the mail back to exchange without doing a restore from a backup? Thanks, ~Jim

Hi, By old computer you meant pst on old system if that's the case then you can just create a MAPI account & revert back to mailbox, what's the connection status of outlook, single user issue or all the users having the same issue, is OWA working fine for these user??Ripu Daman Mina | MCSE 2003 & MCSA Messaging | MCC

By "old computer" I meant the computer the user had been accessing exchange with right along up until it was decided that he needed a second computer in a second location in the shop. As far as I know (I am somewhat new to the network at this company) this is the only user with issues regarding this and I believe other users do access mail via 2 computers. A bit more info. If Outlook is left off on the new computer, the mail will continue to show on the original computer until such time as the new computer opens Outlook. The mail then is removed from the inbox on the old computer. It is acting just like the new computer is using a pop account and removing the mail from the server. I don't know the answer regarding Outlook Web App. I "believe" users are probably using it from laptops, but, I don't know. I have only serviced this company 3 times and the other issues were unrelated.

Solved! Ok, here's what was going on. Not sure how it ended up this way, but, even though it was a MAPI account, the "deliver to" was just set to "username" which caused it to put it in a .pst file. I selected "inbox-username" and it left it on the server as it should have. Odd since it was still using the .ost file. After I changed the deliver to, I copied the mail back to the original folders on the server and all was right with the world. Wish I knew why it happened in the first place.
