opening an MSG file in Outlook

I have a really weird one:

A user has saved emais as .msg files. If they browse to them using windows explorer, she can double-click and Outlook opens and displays the message.

On the other hand, if she is in Outlook (as when she is working remotely via Citrix session), we can find no way of asking Outlook to open the file. (When you go to file-open in Outlook, you have the options to import-export, open a calendar, open another user's folder, or open a .pst file. I tried using the pst option, but outlook wasn't buyig it - it knew the msg wasn't an Outlook data file.)

MS-Word also was unable to open the file.

Does anyone have a way of opening the file from inside of Outlook?

Hi Mike,

Based on my knowledge, there is no option to browse to .msg files and open them from inside Outlook.

As a workaround, we can create a .pst file and then drag and drop these .MSG files into the .pst file. Then, we can browse to the .pst file and view the .MSG file within it.

Or, you need to find a third-party MSG file Viewer to achieve the goal.

OK... that's what I thought. I was hoping someone might know a trick.

It seems awfully silly to allow Outlook to save the files but not open them, but go figure.

thanks
