You cannot install Exchange 2010 in your domain if you have Windows Server 2000 Domain Controllers.  Here are some of the requirements:
-----------

- Schema master (x86 or x64): Windows Server 2003 SP1 Standard or
Enterprise, or Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise, or the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise.

- Global catalog (x86 or x64): In each AD site where you plan to install
Exchange 2010, you must have GC running - Windows Server 2003 SP1 Standard or Enterprise, or Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise, or the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise.

- Domain Controller (x86 or x64): In each AD site where you plan to
install Exchange 2010, you must have writable DC running - Windows Server 2003 SP1 Standard or Enterprise, or Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise, or the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise.
- Active Directory Forest: Forest functional level must be at least
Windows Server 2003 forest functional mode
(Note: If you've raised the domain/forest level to Windows Server 2008/2008R2 functional mode, make sure that RUS is NOT still pointing to a phantom/demoted DC)

No, it's not possible.

First, you need to introduce Server 2003, 2008 or 2012 domain controllers, demote the legacy 200 DC and raise the domain and forest functional level.

Hi,
YES, it is possible to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 even if the Source Forest Functional level is on Windows 2000 Native.

Hi,
In short....

In order to migrate mailboxes to Exchange 2010, you need to prepare the mailboxes for Cross-Forest Moves Using the Prepare-MoveRequest.ps1 script

..and when done you will Create a Remote Legacy Move Request

Windows Server 2000 Forest and Domain functional level is definitely not supported by Exchange 2010.

Probably, Martina means Exchange 2007, which is supported in Win 2000 Forest/Domain level.

The readiness check will fail with:

"Error: The forest functional level of the current Active Directory forest is not Windows Server 2003 native or later. To install Exchange Server 2010, the forest functional level must be at least Windows Server 2003 native."

Anyway, here is the Exchange Server Supportability Matrix:

And finally, you should start with AD upgrade and health checks, before you proceed with the Exchange upgrade.

Are we talking about a single domain with two domain controllers or two separate forests/domains?

No, I did not.
Gjergji44 asked about migration to Exchange 2010 and not a transition.
In a migration, the Source forest functional level doesn't need to be on Windows Server 2003 or later level. That is a requirement for the Target Forest functional level.

That's true. I got the idea (from Gjergji's previous question) that he is talking about a single domain/forest.

I am sorry! My mistake.

Hi,

Agree with Martina, we can migrate Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 across domain when Exchange 2003 is related to windows 2000 DC.

And here is a reference about steps of migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/meamcs/archive/2011/06/10/exchange-2010-cross-forest-migration-step-by-step-guide-part-i.aspx

If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Angela Shi
