internal routing
If employee X leaves the company. And his domain account is disabled in AD, does that mean his mailbox is also disabled? Or does it stay open unless purposelly disabled/deleted?
WHat happens if I email his old disabled mailbox - will I get an error saying this email no longer exists/is disabled?
Or is it common that people will keep the mailbox open and redirect any incoming traffic to an alternative employee? Does that not breach data protection/human rights?
Is there anyway to check all internal redirects that have been setup?

change password when employee leaves the company, assign rights to his mailbox to another user who will be checking leaving employee mailbox and open that mailbox in user outlook or owa.
it does not breach rights and regulations in most countries i have been workingWith kind regards

And can you set up internal routing for ex employees mailboxes, i.e. can it be done?

1. no, his mailbox will not be disabled if you disable the account in AD.
2. It stays open. You can hide it from the GAL. User wont be able to access it as his account is disabled.
3. Mailbox will receive email. No error.Sukh

Thanks again. Is it true theres some sort of 20 day default once a user is deleted from AD that the mailbox will be deleted, or is there something you can tick to to stop the mailbox from being deleted after the 20 days?
Is there any way to list all mailboxes whereby the domain account is disabled but the mailbox isnt? or a way to list all mailboxes that have been hidden from the gal?

By default it is 30 days before a mailbox is deleted. This is set on the database properties.
Keep deleted mailboxes for (days) on Limits tab.

You can see disconnected mailboxes in EMC. For more info

Use CSVDE or get-mailbox to see if they are hidden from GAL.

1. See mailbox deletion settings on the database. You can alos, select the option not to permenently delete mailboxes until the backup is completed so you can be sure that you have a backup of the intended mailbox deletion. -

2. Find all users who are hidden from the GAL -

Is that from when the AD domain user is deleted or disabled? If the user is just disabled does nothing happen?
