install management tools on my 8.1 W/S along side mt 2007 mngmt tools during coexistence

hello,

I have attempted to install the exchange 2013 management tools on my 8.1 machine (which also contains the 2007 mngmt tools)

and I get the error "Exchange Server 2013 can't be installed on a server that has an Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 server role installed. For more information, visit:http:// technet.microsoft.com/library(EXCHG.150)/ms.exch.setupreadiness.Exchange2013AnyOnExchange2007Server.aspx".

Has anyone been able to install mngmt tools side by side...????

As I will be out of office for a period during coexistence and coexistence could be awhile...I would like to have the admin tools (for both) on my machine.

apologies if my searches missed this answer if it has already been published

TIA

Exchange 2013 is managed by remote powershell or the EAC website.  What do you want to install on your workstation?  The queue viewer?

Exchange 2007/10 on the other hand have the Exchange Management Console.  If I were you, I'd install the 2007 EMC on your workstation, and do the rest with remote powershell and EAC.

There is no way to install multiple versions of Exchange software onto the same computer.

Thanks for the response. I was looking to install exchange 2013 mngmt shell. In my reading of various TechNet articles, I thought I read you could use remote powershell, but, if you were going to be using this machine regularly, it was suggested to install all the tools on the client machine from setup...so...won't happen....?

Even when you run the shell from an Exchange server, it is really just running a shortcut for remote powershell.  You can get the exact same functionality from any remote computer running powershell.  This talks about the topic in detail: http://www.mikepfeiffer.net/2010/02/managing-exchange-2010-with-remote-powershell/

Hi,

In addition to Mike's suggestion, I would like to clarify the following thing:

Windows 8.1 is supported only with Exchange 2013 SP1 or later version. It is not supported to install Exchange 2007 management tools on Windows 8.1.

For your reference:

Hope it helps.

Glad I could help.  Amy's right btw.  I didn't even realize you were trying this on Windows 8.1.

yeah... I saw  Amy's post which....fyi... I also appreciate her input...her signature alone provided me with a much needed link to more info/reading (hope she is listening here : )    ).... ....but...unsupported doesn't always mean it doesn't work :)... and....still trying to come up to speed on PS....I have depended on it to perform routine tasks through 2007 EMC...most users are still sitting on the 2007 server. Maybe I should reconsider just using RDP when necessary.

Thanks again to all for the input!

Chris
