how to globally increase mailbox storage limit Exch 2003
Hello, We recently added disks to the SAN on which our Exchange 2003 information stores are kept with the intention of increasing mailbox sizes for our users so they could store more mail. After extending the disk volumes on which the information stores are kept, we increased the storage limits for the mailbox store by running Exchange System Manager, viewing the properties of the store, selecting the limits tab, and increasing the values for "Issue warning at (KB)" and "Prohibit send and receive at (KB)." However, users are still receiving warning messages stating that their mailbox is too large. These users have the "Use mailbox store defaults" check box checked in Active Directory Users and Computers. I am afraid that what has actually taken place is that for any NEW mailboxes that are created, the mailbox size for that mailbox is the new limit we entered. However, for any mailboxes that existed prior to our updating the storage limits on the store, those mailboxes retain the old limit. Have we missed a step? Is there something we need to do so that the larger mailbox size takes effect? Thank you!

I would use a System Policy instead, but what you have done should work. As with everything, if you are not going to restart some services, give it some time. If it does not function, try a system policy, since it should be applied to all accounts in the store affected. If this does not work... Reboot.. Check Logs for issues...

Thank you. Rebooting did the trick. So simple... wish it was documented! Thank you again for the assistance.

you dont need to reboot in the future. just restart the information store service or dismount/remount the store in question.

Thanks. We had some maintenance to do anyway so rebooting was no big deal. Our primary concern at this point is that it would be nice if in the documentation for increasing the storage limits, it noted that one must stop and restart the information store service (through a reboot or other method) for the new limits to take effect. Thanks again for the info.
