how to connect one mail server to the other only to respond with a specfic message.
Hello, I have a legacy old mail server that we are about to shutdown. Can we link it to our new mail server and only have respond with a specific message saying that the old email domain is no longer in use.? Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks!A

This is a twist on an age-old question. The answer is that you should not do this. Bounding replies back to senders leads to potential confusion. The best thing to do is to give everyone an email address on the old domain on the new server. I assume, at this point, from what you have said, that you have moved to a new Active Directory environment otherwise you wouldnt be in the position you are now. Ensure the old email address is the secondary rather than the primary. Emails to user@olddomain.com will go to the right person but any replies will come from user@newdomain.com. Leave it to the users to put on their signatures something like please note new email address. Doing it centrally is dangerous and I warn you off it. Fair enough. Can you please tell me where I would ensure that old email address is the secondary? I would like to make sure where I am confirming this.A

@el_admin 1. As Mark mentioned it can be an issue, however you can implement this properly but expect some issue. Leaving it for the users to manage as a signature will prevent a lot of issues. If you had a a gateway then I would probably do it there rather on Exchange. 2. The primary email address will the the one in bold and SMTP in caps under the email addresses tab for the users object. (see ADUC). You can set this by manully for one users and test, i.e set the new domain as primary and send an email out. You can impment a policy to set this for everyone via Exchange. Sukh

Hi, >Can you please tell me where I would ensure that old email address is the secondary? I would like to make sure where I am confirming this. In "User properties" for a user, find E-Mail Addresses tab. Add a SMTP email Address with old domain for this user. The primary addess should be displayed in bold. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
