Outlook doesn't have settings of its own.  It uses whatever you configured for Windows.

Guess again.  Outlook 2010 is not using the Windows default programs.  HTML files are opening in notepad and jpg's are opening in Paint.  These are not the programs they open with if I open them outside of Outlook.

I am having the same issue. Pictures open in paint not the default program that windows uses to open them. Very Annoying!!???

I am also having this issue on an XP machine.

Windows Explorer has the default program for JPG as windows picture and fax viewer. Outlook opens them up in Paint.

Just a quick question, but have you confirmed they are specifically .JPG or .JPEG files?

On my Win7 box, default programs has JPG files are Windows Live Photo Gallery, and Explorer and Outlook 2010 (Final) both open correctly.

I'm having the same problem with paint.  It doesn't matter if it's JPG or JPEG files. Both are set in the Control Panel to open with my default picture viewer (ACDSee).

Even funnier is that some open in ACDSee.  Other's open in Paint.  I've tried to find some correlation, but can't.

This is REALLY frustrating.

Has anyone figured this out?  I still have the problem.  Outlook should be using whatever program Windows is set to open the file in, yet jpgs and jpegs open in MSPaint 99% of the time.  I've even done the "Send a Frown" thing requesting contact, but get no reply.  I'd urge everyone else here to to do the same thing.

I finally figured it out - If you have windows 7

Select the windows button (bottom left corner) to the right you will see deffault programs - click on that

Then select Associate a file or protocol with program

For myself my pdf's were opening with picture viewer - I found the extension .pdf and changed the program to adobe

Problem solved!

Another way to do this is:

1) Copy the file for which you want to change the default to your desktop. (You'll only have to do this one.)

2) Right click on the image

3) Select Properties (the last choice)

4) On General, you'll see "Opens With" Select the "Change" button

5) Select the program you want to use (popular ones will show up automatically, you may have to hunt for others)

6) Select "apply" and this will automatically set the property for all images/documents of that type.

7) Note this also works if you don't want Notepad to be the default for text files, etc.

8) Also note, as mentioned above, the .JPG and .JPEG are considered different file extensions so you'll have to do this once for each file type.

Hope this helps.

For Windows 8 users, close Outlook and go to the Control Panel (Apps), then choose Default Programs, then pick, "Associate a file type or protocol with a program". Find the file type(s) you care about and choose "Change Program."  RGS
