how do I turn the attachment preview warning on in Outlook 2010
I have a client that is migrating to Windows 7 and Office 2010. They want the security warning to show when clicking on an email attachment "You should only preview files from a trustworthy source". This is the default behavior for Office 2007. The only thing I have found is to change or delete the subkeys under the registry key hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\previewers . Which does not exist in the registry. Other sources have reported that this option is no longer available in Outlook 2010, that you can only change folders to level 1 or level 2. Those options either do not allow certain attachment file types to show at all (level 1) or require that they be downloaded before opening. (level 2). I'm not trying to affect how the files are opened, just the security warning for preview. How (or can I) get this security warning back for my client?

Hi Jeff,

The security warning is still available and enabled by default in Outlook 2010 (and Outlook 2013).

The registry key you mentioned will be created if you have unchecked the "Always warn before previewing this type of file" option, and clicked the "Preview file" button.

Feel free to let me know if there is anything un

That works for PDF files, but not for Word, Excel, Visio, or PowerPoint. All of the programs that are part of Office 2010 do not get a warning before previewing. Yes, that is the key for turning the warning off, but I was attempting to force it to ask by entering a 0 instead of a 1 in the PONTState value.

Is there a way to turn the warning on for those types of files?

Thanks

Same problem here, cannot find a way to enable the 'Always warn..' prompt for default Office Previewers in Win7/Off2k10.

Max, according to this Microsoft article http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/preview-attachments-HA010355566.aspx "By default, these attachment previewers are turned on." and no mention on how to enable the prompt, only to enabled or disabled the preview functionality.  I tried using the key from a WinXP/Off2k10 intallation, where the warn prompts always shows on first use, but they won't work.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

Sorry, I haven't been able to find a way to turn the warning on for the previewers for Office attachments.

Hi,

Open  each office application (Word, Excel, power point) and follow below steps :

Click file->Options->Trust Center->Trust center settings-> Protected view->uncheck "enable protected view for outlook attachments"-Click ok and reopen outlook.

Hope this helps

Thanks, but I'm trying to turn the warning on for previewing attachments from within outlook. The task sequence you sent is for turning OFF protected mode from within the different Office applications themselves. I did try your suggestion, but it had no affect on previewing attachments directly from the email in Outlook.

Thanks

To put what Max wrote another way, if one removes the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Previewers key that will enable the attachment warning for all previewers that Outlook supports; or to selectively enable a warning, remove a single key, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Previewers\htm key for example.

Hope this helps! :)
