exchange server cannot be assigned remove because public folders hirarchy instance needs to be asigned to another server in the organazation
Following the bb288905 article "how to remove the last legacy exchange server from an organization: exchange 2007" this failed on uninstalling the exchange 2003 server with an error that the database was not empty. Steps taken: Prepare the org for removal, 1. Moved all mailboxes 2. Move content from the public folder 3. Move the OAB generation process to the exchange 2007 server 4. Remove public folder mailbox and stores 7. Delete routing group connectors (this broke mail flow - as I expected) 8. Recipient policies (I created new policies on the new exchange server) 9. Mailbox manager settings (policy) tab non existent ********************************* Remove last exchange 2003 from an exchange 2007 org. 1. In exchange system manager, expand administrative groups, right click exchange administrative group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT), select New, and then select Public Folder Container. (This was not an option) 2. Delete each domain recipient update service 3. Was skipped because step 2 worked 4. Uninstall exchange server 2003 (Failed) - Component "Exchange Server and collaboration services" cannot be assigned remove because this is server is the only server with an instance of the “all public folders" hierarchy. If you want to remove, you need to create an instance of this on one of the remaining servers in the organization. 9. Was not set Thank you,

Did you replicate the PF hierarchy to the new server? I'm afraid I'm having a hard time with your numbering scheme above; it's not clear to me what's related to what up there. Missy

Sorry about that, its the numbered steps on the article i was following. two things, one, I am not using public folders anymore, two, how can I check that, I have seen many references to the syncronization of those folders but nothing as to "go here and look" I had actually turned off the exchange server 2003, to see what would break, and the 2007 server ran fine, other then the reference to the old 2003 server. I have turned on that server this morning in attempts to remove 2003 one more time. M

So you're all Outlook 2007, no Outlook 2003?

Then try to open the System Manager and right click your Exchange 2003 server and select "Delete" it should remove it from the System Manager (you should still be able to see the 2007 server in the System Manager). After that try to uninstall again. If that still won't work follow this article to manualy remove Exchange 2003 from you system: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833396 Yanir Ben-Nun / System Team Leader / IT / IS Professional
