exchange backup using wbadmin
Hi I need to backup exchange on a daily basis using wbadmin script as a scheduled task. The script runs as: "wbadmin start backup -include:c:,e: -backuptarget:\\fileserver\folder\MAILBOX_BACKUP\DAILY\ -allcritical -quiet pause" The "pause" is for testing purposes so I can see what's going wrong. I am getting the error that d: is not an ntfs volume and the process fails. The trouble is I don't want to backup d: anyway hence the reason why I used the -include. I tried to use the -exclude switch but that failed suggesting it was in invalid command. What am I doing wrong? Dean

in order to backup your exchange server with wbadmin you have to configure a full backup. start Windows Server backup and choose the option schedule Backup. regards Thomas Paetzold visit my blog on: http://sus42.wordpress.com

You might try -exclude:d: instead of the -include: . I expect that these two mean the same thing, but I'd still try it. And yes, for Exchange, you'll probably need to add -vssFull . Won't the normal backup GUI do a sheduled backup, though?Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

Hi Cheers for the responses. The scheduled backup won't allow me to specify a location on the network for the backups to be saved whereas the once only and the script method do. I have tried to run it with the -allcritical switch off and it did remove the drive ok so I migyht give it a try that way and see what happens. Regards Dean

OK, thats strange. When i start wbadmin on my Exchange 2010 Server I get the options to 1) back up to a hard disk that is detected for backups (recommended) 2) Back up to a volume 3) Back up to a schared network folder. Isn´t 3) the option you need? I´m using Windows Server 2008R2 Exchange 2010 SP1 regards Thomas Paetzold visit my blog on: http://sus42.wordpress.com

I get the same, too. I'd say that for utilities like this*, then if you can do it from the command line, then you can usually do it in the GUI, too. * Nobody please mention Exchange/Powershell :-)Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

OK, thats right. If you want to configure it on the comandline or in Task Scheduler then it is fine. Powerhsell, yes this is another topic. What about checking the backupstauts of the windows Server backup there is no notificaton implemented in this software. I´ve got a script 8powrshell) for that. ;-) But perhaps we should open a new topic. regards Thomas Paetzold visit my blog on: http://sus42.wordpress.com

Sorry Thomas, I should have been clearer. I see the same as you do - in other words, I do see the option to backup to a shared folder. I think you may have thought I meant that I am seeing the same thing as draccus. In the Windows Server Backup GUI, I think that you can get some very basic statistics on how the backup is proceeding, but if you can share your script, I think many people would be interested to see it.Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m

That may well be one of the differences between 2008 R1 and R2. We are running R1 with Exchange 2007 and there is definately no option to run the backup to a network share under the scheduled backup. However, it is an option if I set a "run once" backup going, this is why I was looking at the scripted method. Dean

Actually, when I was try it here, I found it quite easily in the Run Once option, but I nearly missed it in the Schedule option, because it was labelled as something else. Anyway, I'll describe to you where I see it here: Click Backup Schedule Wizard over in the RH pane. Click Next Select Full Backup (there are more dialogs if you click Custom, but I think it ends up in the same place), and click Next. Define your schedule (or just accept the offered one, since we're just testing), and click Next On the next page is an options for .Back up to a hard disk... .Back up to a volume .Back up to a shared network folder I think the last one is what you want. If you don't see it, then you have found a difference. Outlook Web Access For PDA , OWA For WAP www.owa-pda.com email a@t leederbyshire d.0.t c.0.m
