exchange DB out of space
I had done a migration from exch2007 to exch2010SP1(DAG) .. everthing goes fine but now my diskpace (Database Disk) is almost going to full (DB1) . So i created another database(DB2) in server and moved some mailboxes to that data base , still space is not reduced in DB1 , kindly help me how safe i can get the space. Still DB1 having some critical IDS that should not be disturbed also

Still DB1 having some critical IDS that should not be disturbed also Removing information from a database does not casue the file size to shrink, it only creates free space within the database. To reclaim that space you can move the remainng mailboxes to another database and, when the database is empty, remove it. The users will remain connected to the mailbox while they're being moved. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi Rich My prblem here is DB1 i am having 1.4TB disk space in that almost 1.36TB is occupied by the database , because of this only i create another database called DB2 on another drive and moved 50% of users from DB1 to DB2 , still disk space usage is almost 1.36TB only , my issue in here is my 50% users in DB1 should not affected my low diskpace and DB1 should run fine , advise me on this actually i want to use DB1 an DB2 , i created DB2 to balance the space , 50% users should run on DB1 and remaining 50% on DB2 ( i already moved 500 users from DB1 to DB2 , earlier DB1 having 1000 users and diskpace was 1.36TB out of 1.4TB , after i moved 500 users from DB1 to DB2 also my disk space remains same in DB1 i should get the free space in DB1 because 50% users are in DB2 now and DB2 is on another disk) earlier scenario - Drive letter K: (DB1 running on this with 1000 users, total diskpace 1.46TB occupied space 1.36TB by DB1) Current scenario - Drive letter k: (DB1 with 500 users still the space used is 1.36TB out of 1.46TB, 500 users from total users 1000 is moved to DB2) Drive letter J:\ DB2(500 users from DB1 moved here ) question - why still drive letter K:\ shows same space is it cause any problem to mail flow how i can retain space in drive K: i am using exchange 2010sp1 with 2 node DAG , my cas and hub running on another server

Hello After moving the mailboxes your EDB file remains same size if you need to get the white space it requires offline defrementation. Best way is to move all the Mailboxes on DB2 after moving delete the old DB and create a new database on that Drive move the mailboxes to it. You will not have downtime if you move the mailboxes. As told by Rich, moving mailboxes from DB1 to DB2 doesnt reduce the size of DB1, instead white space is created in DB1 which can be claimed by any new incoming messages or mailboxes. The easiest way to find the amount of free space left in DB1 is to check for the Event ID 1221. Hope this helps. Thanks SumanthSumanth G

Thanks Sumanth Sumanth G Exchange 2010 doesn't know Event ID 1221 anymore, instead you can check it using the follwing powershell command: get-mailboxdatabase <databasename> -status | ft AdminDisplayName, AvailableNewMailboxSpace Regards PanoPano Boschung, PageUp AG
