exchange 2010/2003 coexist - problems creating email accounts in 2003
We are two small companies that was a single network for a while, then split into two domains under one forest for business purposes when server 2003 came out. Both companies had their own exchange 2003 boxes but still joined under the forest so that they could see and talk with each other. A couple months ago we updated one of the two companies to exchange 2010. The other company stayed on 2003, hence the coexist part. Well, everything has been working ok since then. But, today I needed to add my first new user account to the company that stayed on 2003. I added the user using the 2003 domain controller. It created the account but when I went to look at and confirm the email addresses, the box was blank... And as such it wont let me create an outlook profile for him on the end user machine. I can log in as the user on the machine but can't create the email profile. As this is my first time to add a new account since the upgrade of company #2, I am not sure where I need to be looking.. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, You should check for any errors in the application log on the Exchange 2003 Server. You might have problemes with RUS and if you do, it will show in the logs (source: MSExchangeAL) Do you really have Exchange System Manager installed on the Domain Controller?Martina Miskovic

As noted before it is two small companies. With the 2010 I have separated exchange off of domain controller, but back when 2003 came out, we had to install it on DC boxes. No RUS related errors in the logs.

Ok, I understand. Can you check your Recipient Update Services (RUS) Settings in ESM. Maybe it still pointing to your old Exchange 2003 Server and not the one that is still "alive".Martina Miskovic

Apologies for the delayed response. Other items have been higher on the fire list. I looked in the ESM on the 2003 exchange box. and yes under RUS for intercompany items it was still set for the turned off exchange 2003 for RUS. The question is, can I simply open that up on the 2003 exchange and change the exchange server to the 2010 box or will that screw everything up (do I have to make the change a different way?)?

Hi, Exchange 2010 doesn't know anything about RUS. Use the browse button and change the server to any Exchange 2003 you have in the other domain.Martina Miskovic

What if I already took out the 2003 exchange out of the other domain? All I have is the 2010 box? Basically Company 1 is Forest master domain Company 2 is nested domain inside the forest Both were on 2003 Company 1 upgraded to 2010, but company 2, the nested domain is still on 2003.

>What if I already took out the 2003 exchange out of the other domain? All I have is the 2010 box? Then you wouldn't have RUS, since Exchange 2010 doesn't use it or have any kind of knowledge about it. >Company 1 upgraded to 2010, but company 2, the nested domain is still on 2003. As long as you have an Exchange 2003 Server and want to create mailboxes in Exchange 2003, you need RUS. Martina Miskovic

Ok, technically, I have not removed the 2003 exchange box from Company 1 yet for those just in case situations just like this. But, I have it turned off most of the time, cause it is having hardware issues and has been cutting out on me anyway. So, the question is, how can company 2 that still uses exchange 2003 connect to the 2010 exchange to be able to create user accounts and mailboxes in 2003? That is, shouldnt the 2003 from company 2 be able to co-exist with the 2010 from company 1? Why does company 1 have to also keep its 2003 box to be able to have company 2 coexist?

I am not wanting the 2010 box to create the user mailboxes on 2003. I want the 2003 box to create its own mailboxes. Maybe the question i am asking is the wrong question... Maybe the question is, why isnt the 2003 exchange making its own mailboxes? Forgive me, I am just trying to figure out why when I create a user on the 2003 DC for company 2 which still uses 2003 exchange, why it is creating the user, but it is not creating a mailbox and giving them email addresses on the 2003 exchange. It is just coming up blank when i go to the email address tab under the user properties in the 2003's active directory.
