exchange 2007 services not starting
After doing update (update rollup 3 for sp1) several services wouldn't start. Like the edge sync, mail submission, transport etc. They are running normally under local system account and network service. When I change the logon to a domain admin, they all start up fine, but that's not the idea off-course. So it must be some security setting issue. Anybody any ideas?

Hi, What events are logged when you try to start the services normally? Leif

Hi, Please check the application and system log, and post the related Event Log here for further research. If the Event 7000 and 7009 were logged in the System log, please refer to the following KB: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=944752 Mike

I am getting the same problem. I am getting the 7000 and 7009 events, but the article did not help.

Hi Alex, Whether you are able to access the following site from the Exchange Server: http://crl.microsoft.com/pki/crl/products/CSPCA.crl Mike

Hi Alex, As your problem Exchange Server is able to access the site and download the file successfully, I think that KB may be not applicable to your issue. I suggest that you start a new thread and describe the issue more detailed. In addition, please also post the related Event Log in the new thread to check whether other persons have further suggestions. Mike

I apreciate what you're saying, but my issue is exactly the same as the post starters problem. "After doing update (update rollup 3 for sp1) several services wouldn't start. Like the edge sync, mail submission, transport etc. They are running normally under local system account and network service. When I change the logon to a domain admin, they all start up fine, but that's not the idea off-course. So it must be some security setting issue." I have the same as him, if I set the logon details to Administrator they will start, but I still don't get any incoming or outgoing mail functionality. The events logged are just the ones stating that the various services can not start in a timely fasion.

Hi Alex, Please attempt the following method: 1. Open the Services MMC snap-in. 2. Locate the Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission service. 3. Double-click Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission Store service. 4. On the Log On tab of the Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission Properties page, select Local System account under Log on as. 5. Clear the Allow service to interact with desktop check box, and then click Apply. 6. Under Service status, click Start, and then click OK. 7. Close the Services snap-in. Note: Services are configured to interact with desktop only when one needs to debug the service. Mike

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I was on holiday. With those settings it fails to start and logs two messages in the event viewer. A 7000 and a 7009 The Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Microsoft Exchange Mail Submission service to connect. I'm wondering at this point whether it is best to set up a spare server with exchange and then move all the users and public folders across, uninstall/wipe the current one and reinstall and move them back. I'm just not sure at this point whether I'll be able to do that with the fact that half these services haven't started.

It certainly does look like I'm not the only one affected yes! I have now tried reinstalling with it still installed andUn-installing and reinstalling I have tried installing it both as the local administrator and as the domain administrator, everything ends up with the services not working. Also, when I unstall it, althought exchange returns to functioning, OWA no longer works. The error I see in the event viewer after installing it is: Event Type:ErrorEvent Source:Microsoft Exchange ServerEvent Category:NoneEvent ID:5000Date:07/08/2008Time:11:49:20User:N/AComputer:DELTADescription:EventType e12, P1 c-rtl-amd64, P2 08.01.0291.001, P3 msexchangemailboxassistants, P4 unknown, P5 unknown, P6 s.serviceprocess.timeoutexception, P7 0, P8 unknown, P9 NIL, P10 NIL. Any advice as to how to move forward would be appreciated, Alex
