Hi, Right, found 3 post for the same issue ... not sure which one your following as they're pretty empty. Anyway, here's the reply I just gave on your previous post, hope it helps. If your AD is still up and running then have a look at the article below. I've used a similar process loads of times to restore exchange in test enviroments with only a system state backup of a dc and a backup of the information store. I only needed the systemstate of the dc as my prod. exchange server was still up an running so I couldn't reset the account in that copy of the domain, obviously. Anyway, pretty much a case of reset exchange computer account, setup /disasterrecovery, then update /disasterrecovery on any exchange service packs, then allowing te databases to be overwritten by a restore, restoring them and playing in the log files to get all consistent and mounting databases. Post back if you have problems. Thanks, Mark http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/Guides/SvrConsUsingE2k3/454d6010-ce35-4b50-91e0-49d342f7ce46.mspx?mfr=true

Sorry for the multiple posts. Posted in the wrong forum first, then wound up with a double here. Anyway the system state is what I dont have. All I have is a backup of the store. (The typical backup you get when using ntbackup and selecting exchange.) The original server is gone, totaly unuseable. So I have rebuilt a new server with the same name, drive structure, AD, but a different ip. I loaded exchange, (Wouldnt load just using /disasterrecovery keep saying I didnt run forestprep just after I did.) then reran setup with /disasterrecovery. Rebooted, retored from backup, now the store wont mount. I have been reading about logs. How do you play them? I think thats part of my issue.

Sorry, I didn't realise you had lost your AD as well. The DisasterRecovery switch installs excange and reads the confguration information of the failed server from AD for you, such as storage groups, databases, file locations, connectors etc. So this is why it didn't work in your new domain. You need to follow a similar process to 2000 separate forest recovery's. Give your exchange organization, administrative group, storage group and databases the same names as your previous install. The legacyexchangedn needs to be the same on the administrative group you are restoring toas that on your previous install. Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324606about renaming this if needs be. Eseutil.exe can be found in the Exchsrvr\bin folder on your Exchange server. Now the log files, your database will be in a dirty shutdown state if it was restored from an online backup. You can confirm this with 'eseutil /m "path to the database"'. To 'play' the logs forward into the database use 'eseutil /cc' as mentioned in the document below. Have a look at this article for more information on how the log files affect recovery from an online backup http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/guides/UseE2k3RecStorGrps/45dfc9fa-8006-471b-baa5-2ec0ab2ad2e7.mspx?mfr=true Hope this helps but post back if you have any issues. Thanks, Mark
