exchange 2003 information store won't start after installation
Server is Windows Server 2003 enterprise edition and exchange 2003. The message I get when trying to start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service from Administrative Tools/Services is Error 1075 : The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion. Looking at the dependencies this appears to be the EXIFS, I couldn't see this in services, but did restart it using net stop EXIFS, followed by net start exifs, though I couldn't see any process start in task manager, the feedback message says the service stopped and started successfully. Thanks Paul

Paul, couple of things, first is see what services are set to automatic for Exchange and see if any of them are not running. The next would be to try and reboot the server. Also, what exchange 2003 service pack are you running on that server, or have you applied them yet? Let us know. thanks

Hi Mark Thanks for the quick response. The 2 automatic services that aren't running are Microsoft Exchange Information Store Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks I have just restarted the server after Windows Server updates and tried to start both the above services, both produce the message Error 1075 ... as detailed before. The MTA Stacks doesn't appear to have any dependencies, making the error slightly more obscure. I haven't applied any exchange service packs yet, on the basis of getting things working first. Thanks Paul

any mailboxes on the server yet, besides the system attentdant one? you have a couple of options, one is uninstalling it if no mailboxes were on it, the other would be to troubleshoot the issue further. I have run into this in the past and just had a flaky installation, and onced i reinstalled, or did a repair from the Exchange cd, it went away.

Paul, the 1075 error is about as generic of an error message as there is. i would also look at teh exchange setup log to see if there were other issues that occured during setup. should be on C drive.

I was debating about reinstalling, but didnt want to go through the hassle if it was simple to fix. I haven't got as far as creating any mailboxes yet. I will try reinstalling in the first instance, will be a day or 2 before I have time. Thanks for the help, I'll respond with the outcome. Paul
