excel 2013 - scollbar not visible in drop down data validation field

Opened new SP1 excel file in office 2013, and defined Data Validation for a cell. The validation based on a list of 15 values placed in a consecutive set of cells, with numeric values in downward direction.

When i click on the selection arrow that appears within the cell, the list appears but without scroll bar - it is though possible to use the keyboard up & down arrows to go up and down within the list and also reach values that are not displayed at first.

Some of the time there's a thick black line displayed instead of scrollbar, but not usable. Also sometimes, the scrollbar appears for a short time but also not usable.

Procedure was repeated in two separate computers, same results. Problem doesn't occur in office 2010. Can u pls advise ? Thx

Hi,

Does the Excel file create via previous version? If yes, we might encounter the Data Validation Arrows missing issue when open the xlsx created by Excel 2010/2007.

In my option, The problem might be caused by the setting for Excel 2013 client site. There were some other shapes on the worksheet, like logos, or text boxes, and we changed a setting to hide them. Because they're objects too, the dropdown arrows will also be hidden.

To make the objects visible again, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Office Button, then click Excel Options.
  2. Click the Advanced Category
  3. Scroll down to the 'Display Options for This Workbook' section
  4. Under 'For Objects, Show', select All, then click OK.

Hope it's helpful.

Thank u for your reply.

1. The excel file is created as new from within excel 2013, i.e. created as excel 2013 xlsx.

2. The For Objects, Show, is already on 'All'.

3.Configuration Analyzer Tool didn't yield related problems (only disabled addins like VS 2010 add in).

Would kindly appreciate additional advice. Also, does this occur on your office 2013 excel too ?

Hi Moital,

I have not seen this issue with my Excel version(15.0.4693.1000), you may try this version.

In additional, please try to use a Named Range for validation instead of the cell ranges, because Data Validation in Excel is restricted to cell ranges on the same WorkSheet.

Thank u for your response.

Already tried to use Named Range with same results.

The version of excel as shown in excel about screen is 15.0.4711.1000 which is more advanced than the one you have installed 105.4693.1000. As best i understand the more advanced version is office 2013 with SP1. This could be the reason, and maybe there's a bug in this matter in excel SP1 bahavior.

Do u happen to have office 2013 SP1 installed somewhere close to you, so to kindly try to repeat the few simple steps, to try repro the problem. This would help to find out if that is the source of the problem, If it's not too much of trouble of course.

I kindly thank u for your help. BR.

Hi,

I have received your attachment, and found the reason. Your file has selected the "Show sheet right-to-left" option. If we show the content from right-to-left, the text strings will cover the selection arrow, thus, it does not display correctly. Please try to clean the option, and then the dropdown list will display as normal. See the image below.

The file is indeed with "Show sheet right-to-left" option lit, because the original laguage in which this excel is written is one that needs to be shown right to left. Any idea how to solve / bypass the problem when the needed direction is right to left, or maybe a bug in such a case in office 2013 ?

Just to clarify : i placed values in english in the cells, just to simplify readability...
