event id 702 Online defragmentation is resuming its pass on database
MSExchangeIS (3144) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation is resuming its pass on database 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb'. This pass started on 19/10/2012 and has been running for 1 days. the database is 53gb. I changed the deleted item retention from 30 to 1 day to stop it growing. have set it to 10 days now. would this be the reason the online defrag is not completing and should I be concerned about this? a few hours later I get event 704 MSExchangeIS (3144) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation of database 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb' was interrupted and terminated. The next time online defragmentation is started on this database, it will resume from the point of interruption. the defrag runs between 1 and 5am. Arcserve backup starts at 11pm and overlaps with the exchange defrag. at 5 we get event id 1221 The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Database" has 23328 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated. `joe prior

I think you shouldn't worry about it. Fix the overlap and find out how long it takes the task to complete -- then set the schedule to not run longer than that. What you may be seeing is that defrag completes and then starts again within the same maintenance window, but then doesn't have enough time to complete the 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) pass. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Thanks for your reply. From the 3 event can you confirm the following is correct? The defrag starts at 4.59 on 20th, resumes @ 1.01 on 21st and completes at 2.07. Id 704 at 4.59 on 20th MSExchangeIS (3144) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation of database 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb' was interrupted and terminated. ID 702@ 1.01 on 21st MSExchangeIS (3144) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation is resuming its pass on database 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb' iD 703 @ 2.07 on 21st MSExchangeIS (3144) First Storage Group: Online defragmentation has completed the resumed pass on database 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\Mailbox Database.edb', freeing 171 pages. This pass started on 20/10/2012 and ran for a total of 3944 seconds, requiring 2 invocations over 1 days. Since the database was created it has been fully defragmented 1356 times over 1362 days. Why does the defrag run more than once during maintenance. If I set the window to end at 4.30 rather than 5, will this prevent the second defrag from starting and thus prevent ID 704?`joe prior

Because you've scheduled it to run during that period of time -- and that's what it does. >If I set the window to end at 4.30 rather than 5, will this prevent the second defrag from starting and thus prevent ID 704? How long does a complete pass take? it looks like it take just over an hour. Just adjust the schedule to not run much longer than that, or just for an hour. It isn't important that an entire pass be completed every day, just so long as it completes every few days (or once a week). You're never going to get it to run "just once" becasue you can only adjust the schedule on 15-minute increments. If pass#1 finishes at 4:14AM it's going to start pass#2 and then terminate pass#2 at 4:30AM. At that time of the morning, does it really matter? If you're seeing disk/memory contention during that period then go ahead and adjust schedules -- otherwise you can just leave it alone. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

I have 2 more questions if you can help. I set a figure of 75 as per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/bb232092.aspx But Event id 1216 shows The Exchange store 'First Storage Group\Mailbox Database' is limited to 117 GB. The current physical size of this database (the .edb file) is 51 GB. If the physical size of this database minus its logical free space exceeds the limit of 117 GB, the database will be dismounted on a regular basis. Why is the limit 117? Why does event id 703 report the database has been defragmented over 1362 days, when the server has been in operation only 2 years?`joe prior

Probably because you used 0x75 instead of a decimal 75. 0x75 == 117 decimal >Why does event id 703 report the database has been defragmented over 1362 days, when the server has been in operation only 2 years?
