error installing exchange sp1
we've successfully installed exchange 2007 sp1 on or client access server and hub transport. Now when we try and install it on the mailbox server we get this error: Mailbox Role Failed Error: Active Directory operation failed on dc03.domain.com. The object 'CN=First Storage Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=EX07,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=Company name,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com' already exists. The object exists. Elapsed Time: 00:00:53 I have no idea why this would say it already exists....of course it exists...it's an upgrade!! Any help would be awesome!!! thank you Joe

What steps are you doing to perform the upgrade?

I've had exectly the same result. CAS and HUB servers upgraded fine but SP1 on the mailbox server fails with the following in the setup log: [1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [1] [ERROR] Active Directory operation failed on tad2dc3.****.**.***. The object 'CN=First Storage Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=TAD2-E7MBX1,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=**********************,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=tadr,DC=**,DC=***' already exists.[1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [1] [ERROR] The object exists.[1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [1] Setup is halting task execution because of one or more errors in a critical task.[1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [1] Finished executing component tasks.[1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [1] Ending processing.[1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [0] The Exchange Server Setup operation did not complete. For more information, visit http://support.microsoft.com and enter the Error ID.[1/29/2008 12:45:24 PM] [0] End of Setup I've tried removing the watermark and action reg keys and re-running it but no joy. GUI and setup /mode:upgrade produce the same result. There are no active mailboxes on this server so I even attempted to uninstall to start from scratch but unfortunately the original product refuses to uninstall. Surprisingly the server runs OK without errors - just can't upgrade or uninstall. Maybe I need a bigger hammer. Jeff

It looks like a common error.I have the same issue. Exchange installed in different tree than root domain. ran /prepareschema and prepareAD from root domain succesfully. and it failed upgrading Mailbox role after successful CAS and Hub roles upgrade with exact same error. Please update this thread if you find any resolution. Thx Raz

I got the fix folks!!!! Issue was that the SP1 install is thinking it's a new installation not an upgrade. We have to update/add some reg keys: 1. backup/export [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0\MailboxRole] 2. delete Action and Watermark key if you have them. 3. Add new StringValue and call it "ConfiguredVersion" and add the value 8.0.535.0 4. add this same value in for UnPackedVersion Run the SP1 install and VOILA..it will work. NOTE: This worked for me and I cannot guarantee that this will work for you and I take no responsibilites if your system crashes... I just want to be kind and help peopleout! Microsoft said that they would soon be putting out a KB article on this. Ciao for now. Joe
