enable pop3 for blackberry user
Hi, Is it fine to enable the pop3 service on exchange 2003 to support blackberry users? If so, where should I do that, on BE or FE? As I do not have more experience on that, please correct me if I'm on the wrong way. Thanks.

Enabling POP3 service give users the possibility to connect and download emails using POP3-capable client. Probaly some BB devices support POP3, but this definitely not the way BB was concepted for. There are few methods enabling BlackBerry service in the organisation and the choise depends on your needs: 1. BlackBerry Enterprise Server 2. BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express (free version) 3. BlackBerry Internet Service. If you rely on POP3 mailboxes, have a close look on the latter one - BIS

Thanks for your prompt reply, but my question is still here: where should I enable the POP3 services on exchange server? BTW, if I buy the BIS service from ISP, do I still need set up any server in my organization?

As far as I know (though I do not use BIS) you must create an account here https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=vzw Please read End User Agreement firstly and especially part relating to the description of service. Short description can be found also here: http://www.airtimemanager.co.uk/Blackberry/InternetMail/Works.aspx

Your best option is to deploy BES Express. That doesn't require any additional subscriptions etc on the handset and will give full functionality to the handset. POP3 access basically means you will be using a small subset of the features of the Blackberry device. BES Express allows the device to be used with BIS. You can't have a Blackberry without at least BIS subscription. POP3 is an awful protocol, too easy to lose email, and you will lose read/unread status in the mailbox in Outlook because all messages will be "read" by the Blackberry. The protocol is managed by the CAS machines. The POP3 service isn't started, by default. You'll have to set the service to start automatically. >BTW, if I buy the BIS service from ISP, do I still need set up any server in my organization? BIS uses OWA. Hi Rich, I'm using Exchange 2003. Should I enable on FE or both FE and BE sides?

Short description can be found also here: http://www.airtimemanager.co.uk/Blackberry/InternetMail/Works.aspx Agree. Based on my research, you must firstly have an BIS account, and then you can sync your email to your Blackberry via Outlook Web App. So, there is no problem on your Exchange 2003 FE server. Here are numerous explanations on how to connect to Microsoft Outlook Web Access, and step by step guid: Setting up a new BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) account http://blog.brightpointuk.co.uk/setting-new-blackberry-internet-service-bis-account How to integrate a Microsoft Outlook Web Access email address with a BlackBerry Internet Service account http://btsc.webapps.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB03133 Add a Microsoft Outlook Web Access email address http://na.blackberry.com/eng/deliverables/2584/add_Outlook_Web_Access_account_98532_11.jsp How To Receive Email On Your Blackberry From Outlook Web Access Account http://www.blackberrycool.com/2005/05/how-to-receive-email-on-your-blackberry-from-outlook-web-acce... If the end user got their Blackberry from a service provider then it must have BIS - it would be automatically applied to the subscription. I am not aware of it being a separate item from any service provider, except on a SIM only deal. The IP address that is in your log is a RIM IP address from the UK, which would tend to point to the end user is using BIS. Otherwise he could be simply browsing to OWA using the built in browser.
