deletion of mail-enabled contacts caused Exchange Server 2003 SP2 to misdirect messages
Several months ago I imported just over 2000 mail-enabled contacts into our Active Directory using a small VB script and an Excel spreadsheet. The first time I ran this script, duplicate entries were encountered which caused the script to stop the import at the duplicate entry. At that point I went back and cleaned up the entry in the spreadsheet, deleted the partial list of mail-enabled contacts in AD and started again. I had to do this a number of times as there were many duplicates. (I knew at the time this was a poor approach, there were other extenuating circumstances that I can't get into right now.)Unbeknownst to me at the time, about 15 emails that were sent out from our domain to external smtp addresses were misdirected. An email addressed to one recipient went to a seemingly random unintended recipient. Upon further investigation, I saw that the addresses involved were in the spreadsheet I had been trying to import. I concluded that the repeated import and deletion of the mail-enabled contacts caused this behavior. Once I became aware of the problem, I deleted all the mail-enabled contacts once and for all and everything returned to normal. The reason behind this was that we would like to be able to send a press release email to these contacts so my plan was to get the data in a spreadsheet and use the VB script to import the contacts into a separate OU. Then I would just stick all the contacts into a group and email the group whenever we had a press release.Fast forward to today. We want to send out another press release so again, I'm faced with reimporting the contacts only this time I have set up a test Domain Controller with Exchange Server on it. In addition, I have cleaned up the spreadsheet so that there are no duplicates at all and I can smoothly import all the users from the spreadsheet in the test environment. That being said, I am still very wary of what might happen given what's happened in the past if I go ahead and import the spreadsheet in our production environment. I have ADmodify 2.1 and thought that once the contacts get imported, I'd use that to hide them from the Exchange address lists.I have two questions:1) Has anyone seen mail get misdirected due to mail-enabled contacts (or even mail-enabled users for that matter) getting deleted?2) Is there an easier way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?thanks
