Hello No you cannot have inplace upgrade from Windows 2003 to 2008 running Exchange server, the best way for upgrading is you need to have one seperate hardware install windows 2008 and exchange 2007 on it and then move the mailboxes from old server to new this is recommened way of upgrading and even users will not have down time. But if you are going to upgrade Windows 2003 inplace upgrade with 2008 running Exchange 2007 it will not support Please check this link for more info, http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2007/10/04/3404068.aspx Thanks Mhussain

Agree you can't do in place upgrade from 2003 to 2008. The only option is to install new Exchange 2007 on 2008 and do the migration. Cheers,Gulab | MCITP: Exchange 2010-2007 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah | Blog: www.ExchangeRanger.Blogspot.com

Why not go for Exchange 2010 and Windows Server 2008 R2 if you're doing the upgrade. It's almost identical in effort. lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Hi, When Exchange 2007 (RTM or SP1) is installed on a computer, the operating system cannot be upgraded in place. So you can’t upgrade Exchange 2007 from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008. Although the RTM version of Exchange 2007 cannot be installed on Windows Server 2008, Exchange 2007 SP1 is supported for installation on Windows Server 2008. So you can’t install Exchange 2007 RTM on Windows Server 2008. It’s a pretty simple process: Install Windows Server 2008->join it to domain->configure DNS->install Exchange sever 2007->apply the rollup and hotfixes->recreate send connector, receive connector, transport policies->change MX record for the new HT server and update the DNS server->move mailboxes to new server->remove old server from organization->configure CAS settings to new server. For more information, you can refer to the following articles: Migrating Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 to Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 How to Move Exchange Server 2007 to New Hardware and Keep the Same Server Name(technet) How to Move Exchange Server 2007 to New Hardware and Keep the Same Server Name Hope this helps.
